About The Position

RxSight® is an ophthalmic medical technology corporation headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California that has commercialized the world’s first and only adjustable intraocular lens (IOL) that is customized after cataract surgery. The company’s mission is to revolutionize the premium cataract surgery experience by allowing surgeons to partner with their patients to achieve optimized results for every unique eye. OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Materials Scientist in the R&D Chemistry Department, the Polymer Chemist position will be responsible for supporting chemical and material characterization projects for current and future generations of the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) platform. Key responsibilities include characterization of silicone and acrylic materials, and elastomers derived therefrom.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated laboratory and instrumental analysis skills.
  • Strong background in polymer chemistry/materials science.
  • In depth knowledge of elastomeric materials characterization techniques: tensile testing, rheology, UV-Vis, Raman, FTIR, as well as thermal characterization techniques such as DSC and TGA.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry or Polymer Engineering is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with significant laboratory experience in polymer chemistry is also acceptable.
  • 0-3 years of relevant work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to learn scientific instrument software as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong preference for a minimum of 1 year in medical devices industry focusing on material formulation and characterization.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze raw materials, intermediate formulation mixes, and final formulations using chemical/polymer characterization techniques including GPC, rheology, Raman, UV-Vis, 1H, 13C, 29Si NMR and FTIR spectroscopy.
  • Analyze elastomeric materials using conventional soft material characterization techniques including tensile testing, rheology, DSC and TGA.
  • Aid in the development of silicone and acrylic formulations to yield materials with desired processing and performance profiles.
  • Communicate material status, test results, and potential roadblocks to non-technical teams.
  • Assist in root cause analysis (RCA) for material failures and/or processing deviations.
  • Organize and present data summaries, identifying trends and recommend corrective actions where applicable.
  • Assist in process development by coordinating with members of other departments in the transfer of materials under consideration.
