About The Position

At Berklee College of Music, public safety is part of a larger mission: to educate, inspire, and empower artists and innovators to shape the future of music and the performing arts. The Sergeant plays a key leadership role in creating a safe, inclusive, and student-centered campus where creativity can thrive. Working under indirect supervision, the Sergeant serves as the first line of leadership on an assigned shift, coordinating and guiding officers and department staff in daily operations. This role blends operational oversight with mentorship, ensuring high standards of professionalism, accountability, and care across the community.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Criminal Justice (or related field) or a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Minimum of 3 years of sworn full-time law enforcement experience
  • Massachusetts POST certification (MPTC academy completion or approved exemption)
  • Active Massachusetts driver’s license, CPR/First Aid certification, and unrestricted License to Carry
  • Strong knowledge of law enforcement practices, supervision, and investigative procedures
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to build trust across diverse communities
  • Sound judgment, integrity, and a commitment to equitable, student-centered policing

Responsibilities

  • Lead shift operations by assigning, reviewing, and evaluating officer performance and ensuring compliance with policies and standards
  • Mentor, coach, and support officers’ professional growth while reinforcing a positive, inclusive department culture
  • Oversee responses to calls for service, ensuring timely, effective, and community-focused outcomes
  • Conduct and supervise investigations, review reports for accuracy, and maintain thorough documentation
  • Address complex or sensitive situations with professionalism, including resolving complaints and recommending appropriate action
  • Support training efforts, identify development needs, and help translate learning into practice
  • Collaborate with campus partners and external agencies to enhance safety and service delivery
  • Model calm, decisive leadership in emergencies while prioritizing the well-being of students, staff, and visitors
