About The Position

Under the close supervision of the Patrol Sergeant, the primary responsibility
of the Cadet is to attend the prescribed training sessions to learn the
principles, practices and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement and
codified and case law. The Cadet also receives training in report writing,
physical fitness techniques, firearms use and maintenance, and arrest and
control techniques. Under close supervision, the Cadet may assist other police
officers in the performance of their duties.

The mission of the Public Safety Department at California Polytechnic Maritime
Academy is to promote a safe and secure learning environment by working
cooperatively with the campus community to enforce the laws, preserve the peace,
maintain order and provide exceptional professional services to our guests and
our community. The Public Safety Department consists of an Operations Division
and a Support Division. The Operations Division is the Cal Poly Police
Department which is a full service professional law enforcement agency that
provides service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year round. All officers are
vested with full police officer powers and are certified by the California
Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).

Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30
miles northeast of San Francisco), Cal Poly Maritime Academy is a unique and
specialized campus of the 23-campus system. Serving a population of
approximately 1000 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only
seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one
on the West Coast. Cal Poly Maritime Academy offers seven baccalaureate degrees
in Business Administration, International Strategy and Security, Facilities
Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering,
Marine Transportation, and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes
licensing programs for future merchant marine, Coast Guard, and Naval Reserve

Requirements

• Working knowledge of existing criminal code and laws; and general knowledge of crime prevention and first aid.
• Ability to acquire a working knowledge of public safety, including law enforcement methods, traffic control, arrest and safety procedures applicable to a campus environment.
• Ability to render assistance in accordance with University Police policy and procedures manual.
• Ability to assess law enforcement or other hazardous situations and determine an appropriate course of action.
• Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
• High school diploma or equivalent and eligibility to attend a certified Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) basic training academy.
• A minimum of 21 years of age.
• Possession of a valid California driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
• Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
• Eligible to obtain a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or possess a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
• Must be able to obtain within 1 year and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card for work aboard the Training Ship.
• Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
• Applicants for staff and management positions must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.
