About The Position

The Police Cadet, under supervision, attends an approved Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) basic police training program/academy and receives on-the-job training in the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Police Department (UPD). The Police Cadet will also be required to pass the police academy physical fitness test involving a distance run, push-ups, sit-ups, and sprint at the end of the academy. The cadre at the police academy will conduct the physical fitness test upon entry to measure where the cadet stands on the pass or fail standards. During the police academy, the police cadet will be provided time to train physically, allowing them to make improvements for the final physical fitness test.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of full-time experience.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Upon employment, applicant must complete the basic police academy and pass the required State of Texas police licensing exam.
  • Must have a valid State of Texas or Arkansas Class “C” vehicle operator’s license and good driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Ability to lift and/or move moderately heavy objects and walk, stand, or sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be in excellent physical health and stamina.
  • All system university police recruits will be required to meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) § 217.1.
  • Must successfully pass psychological evaluation, physical examination, and complete background investigation to include but not limited to driving history, criminal background, and credit history.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population.
  • Ability to function under adverse and stressful conditions.
  • Must pass the State of Texas police licensing exam within two (2) attempts.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be able to qualify with TAMU-T provided firearm on a course of instruction approved by TCOLE
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test.
  • Must be able to work beyond normal office hours, including shift work and/or work on weekends and holidays
  • Must not be on court ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense above the grade of Class C Misdemeanor; must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor offense above the grade of Class C within the last five years; must never have been convicted at any time of a felony offense
  • Must have a good driving record, with no more than three moving violations within the last three years
  • Must never have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence as defined by the Federal Gun Control Act

Nice To Haves

  • 30 or more credit hours from an accredited college or university
  • Active-duty service in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 applications
  • Prior or current commissioned law enforcement experience in another state.

Responsibilities

  • Attends a field training program sponsored by the University Police Department.
  • Attends and completes an approved TCOLE basic police training academy and the Texas A&M University-Texarkana University Police Department orientation course.
  • Participates in intensive classroom instruction programs and practical exercises.
  • Observes and assists qualified peace officers in the performance of routine police activities.
  • Studies and becomes familiar with Texas A&M University System and University Police Department policies and procedures.
  • Learns layout of Texas A&M University-Texarkana campus including buildings, streets, major departments, etc.
  • Becomes proficient in the use of police vehicles and equipment, which requires operating a vehicle.
  • Safely operates and properly maintains departmental vehicles.
  • Unlocks doors and buildings and assists campus community with vehicle jumpstarts, unlocks and tire changes.
  • Provides security during special details/events and security escorts when requested.
  • Participates and completes a Texas A&M University-Texarkana University Police Department field training course upon successful graduation from the academy.
  • Maintains satisfactory level of computer knowledge for necessary reporting and training.
  • Maintains 100% compliance with timely completion of required System, University, and job-specific training courses.
  • Displays the tolerance necessary for accepting instruction, supervision, and constructive criticism regarding duty performance.
  • Interacts with the public, University staff and students daily.
  • Aids the public whenever possible.
  • Aids other law enforcement and community departments or agencies.
  • Patrols property under the jurisdiction of the University by car, bicycle or on foot.
  • Enforces all criminal laws and violations of the Transportation Code of the State of Texas as well as university rules and regulations.
  • Takes reports and performs preliminary investigations.
  • Reports all violations of the rules and regulations.
  • Prevents crime, suppresses disturbances, issues citations, and testifies in Justice of the Peace Court as well as County and District Courts and student judicial hearings.
  • Responds to emergency calls and takes appropriate action.
  • Testifies in court for criminal and traffic offenses.
  • Documents all incidents both criminal and non-criminal
