About The Position

Police Corporals will perform a variety of duties and tasks related to community policing and maintaining a secure and orderly environment in protection of the Airport District. In addition to those responsibilities, Corporals are expected to assume the functional responsibilities of the Police Sergeant in their absence and are required to act as the Field Training Officer to any newly hired police personnel which they may be assigned. This position serves as a uniformed law enforcement representative of the District, performing all duties commensurate to this responsibility. Enforces all applicable laws, regulations, and procedures, to include, issuing warnings, citations, and making arrests as required. Performs both preventive foot and vehicle patrols of Airport District facilities and grounds. Provides first aid as required and within the scope of their knowledge and training.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; associate degree or higher, preferred.
  • Currently certified Class 1 Officer with at least two (2) years of experience, required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of District and Department policy, criminal statutes, rules and regulations, case law, general practices related to law enforcement, police management and administrative practices and procedures, and the geography of the Airport District.
  • Have the ability to discharge a firearm without undue risk to airport employees, tenants, and the public, and comply with department firearm standards.
  • Demonstrate proficient operation of a police vehicle and the ability to operate an emergency vehicle and police communications equipment at the same time.
  • Maintain good customer service and community policing skills when dealing with employees, tenants, and the public.
  • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer is necessary, including, but not limited to, skills in Microsoft Office products.
  • This position requires skills in prioritization, organization, verbal communications and interpersonal relations, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Maintains, facilitates, and actively participates in the achievement of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport PD and the District’s Mission, Goals, and Values.
  • Successfully complete an approved Field Training Officer training program.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Must be certified by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Training Council or meet the minimum requirements for entry into the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Successfully complete the requirements of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy pre-hire testing which may include psychological profile, Police Officers Selection Test, Polygraph Exam, medical physical, drug and alcohol screening, and the field training program.
  • Must currently have or shall obtain a qualified Field Training Officer certification within 6 months of assuming the position and prior to acting in a Field Training Officer capacity.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a background investigation, drug screening, and physical examination as per Federal, State and GSP Airport District requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely assigned to police patrol shift.
  • Acts as the Field Training Officer to newly hired officers in training (OIT) assigned to their shift. Train, mentor, and supervise the OIT for the duration of their Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP).
  • Prepares and submits required reports and evaluations of the OIT’s performance during their FTEP.
  • Assumes functional supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Sergeant, to include daily shift planning and operational oversight, review of subordinate reports for accuracy and completeness and approve the report in the appropriate report management system.
  • Performs and enforces traffic control and parking rules.
  • Investigates crimes, accidents, and suspicious activity on Airport District property.
  • Prepares incident, booking, and accident reports.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies, writes state summons, and attends court when required.
  • Assists the general public, performs lockout, escort, and protective services as needed or directed.
  • Assists with the enforcement of the Airport Security Plan and Airport Emergency Plan requirements.
  • Operates a police vehicle on patrol, non-emergency response, emergency response, or pursuit for the apprehension of suspects.
  • Must qualify annually with duty weapon or as prescribed by an approved Academy firearms instructor program. Duty weapon proficiency is to be maintained above eighty percent (80%).
  • Maintains, facilitates, and actively participates in the achievement of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport PD and the District’s Mission, Goals, and Values.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
