About The Position

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Plumbing Maintenance Supervisors are responsible for supervising, coordinating, and directing the activities of skilled, semiskilled, and unskilled trades positions engaged in maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and construction activities. Duties of a Plumbing Maintenance Supervisor may include the following but are not limited to: Shall use the tools of the Plumbing and Steamfitter trade including hand tools, portable power tools, shop equipment and standard measuring instruments. Perform the activities and tasks of a Plumber and Steamfitter. The Incumbent shall supervise and plan the work for subordinate maintenance crew of skilled, semiskilled and relatively unskilled employees. Examines blueprints to determine dimensions, material and labor requirements to accomplish project, and orders materials and supplies. As required, prepares rough sketches or plans to scale from verbal or written instructions. Assigns staff to each project providing verbal instructions, and blueprints or plans. Meets with Supervisors representing the other trades involved in the project to coordinate activities, and schedules work to be performed to insure that work continues on schedule. Observes and inspects the project while in progress and when completed to insure the project is completed on schedule and according to plan. Inspects work performed by outside contractors to insure conformance with project specifications. Keeps written records of work performed, and accounts for labor and materials used. Periodically prepares standard written evaluations of the work performance of subordinates.

Requirements

  • Must meet qualifications of Trades Specialist (Plumber and Steamfitter) plus one year of trades experience.
  • Trades Specialist requirements are: Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson; which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a skilled journey-level plumber and/or steamfitter.
  • Hospital and/or healthcare setting experience.
  • Previous supervisory experience (in a health care and/or unionized setting).
  • Knowledge of Regulatory Agency Compliance (Joint Commission, DOH, CMS).
  • Valid and current NYS driver's license.
