Another Source’s client, Harvey Mudd College, is recruiting a Plant Engineer and Director of Maintenance to join its Facilities and Maintenance team in Claremont, California. Position Summary The Plant Engineer and Director of Maintenance (PEDM) is responsible for the leadership, planning, and oversight of the College’s plant operations, including the Central Plant and all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. This role manages maintenance staff, building mechanics, general maintenance technicians, and external contractors, ensuring safe, compliant, reliable, and sustainable operations across campus. The PEDM partners closely with Facilities leadership, Finance, Sustainability, and regulatory agencies to maintain infrastructure performance, manage renewal and replacement programs, and support capital and renovation projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or facilities management, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance and plant operations, including supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience with MEP systems and California building codes.
  • Valid California Driver License meeting College insurance requirements.
  • Deep expertise in MEP systems, HVAC, water treatment, and facility management systems.
  • Strong knowledge of California codes, construction practices, and sustainability standards.
  • Proven budget management and project leadership skills.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, manage multiple priorities, and communicate complex concepts clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a shared governance and service-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Formalize and maintain plant operations procedures and preventive maintenance programs across all systems, including life safety and manufacturer requirements.
  • Maintain AHJ permits and resolve violations with agencies such as AQMD, City, State, and Fire Marshal.
  • Manage and monitor MEP system budgets and utilities.
  • Review, code, approve, and process maintenance and utility invoices.
  • Oversee work order coordination and reporting through the College’s work order system.
  • Maintain complete project documentation, including warranties, as-builts, manuals, drawings, and electronic records.
  • Support Facilities leadership with presentations, communications, and special projects.
  • Supervise building management systems and lead troubleshooting, repair, replacement, and system improvements.
  • Review construction and repair documents for accuracy, compliance, and alignment with College standards.
  • Conduct facility inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to faculty, staff, students, and vendors on plant and MEP systems.
  • Lead facilities surveys, assessments, and system evaluations.
  • Supervise maintenance and plant operations staff impacting MEP systems.
  • Develop and deliver training in safety, emergency preparedness, regulatory compliance, and technical skills.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and service excellence aligned with the College’s mission.
  • Collaborate with The Claremont Colleges Services Central Facilities team on shared utilities and infrastructure systems.
  • Lead the College’s Renewal and Replacement Reserve (RRR) Program in partnership with Finance.
  • Manage planning and construction administration for RRR projects.
  • Track mechanical plant renewal projects and prepare reports for governance committees.
  • Support space planning and forecasting efforts.
  • Serve as liaison with city, state, and federal agencies under the direction of Facilities leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Collaborate across Facilities, Finance, Sustainability, and The Claremont Colleges consortium.
  • Identify and implement energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives.
  • Support GreenFund administration and sustainability project evaluation.
  • Ensure compliance with safety programs including IIPP and campus hazard protocols.
