The Plans Examiner meets with the public and contractors to review and examine plans, documents, specifications, and applications for permits on all building construction, additions, alterations, and repairs. Essential functions include becoming knowledgeable of city ordinances related to building permits and inspections and all Building codes, and using these in processing applications. The role involves assisting applicants with compiling and reviewing applications, submittals, and building plans for permits to ensure conformance to Zoning and Building codes. It also includes reviewing applications for permits and Certificates of Occupancy for compliance with local codes, Zoning, other City requirements, and State laws. The Plans Examiner examines applications and documents for data accuracy, confers with applicants or personnel from other City divisions to resolve discrepancies, and compiles required changes. They make recommendations to approve or reject permit applications involving difficult or technical Building and/or Zoning issues. Additionally, the position supports the Building Official and Assistant Building Official with research in code issues and tax records for properties involved in code compliance, retrieves required records from microfilm and other data sources, supports departmental operations with regular and timely attendance, and maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information.
