About The Position

The Planer Tool Setter is responsible for setting up, adjusting, maintaining, and troubleshooting industrial planer machines within the sawmill. This position ensures planer heads and tooling are properly installed, aligned, and maintained to produce high-quality finished lumber, with a strong preference for experience working with pine products. The ideal candidate will have manufacturing experience, in-depth knowledge of planer machine operation, and the ability to diagnose machine defects and performance issues.

Requirements

  • Strong working knowledge of industrial planer machines
  • Experience setting up, adjusting, and troubleshooting planer equipment
  • Knowledge of lumber grading and characteristics, preferably pine
  • Understanding of common planer defects and machine-related issues
  • Ability to read and interpret production specifications and measurements
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts and overtime as needed

Responsibilities

  • Set up and change planer heads, knives, and tooling according to production specifications
  • Install, align, and calibrate cutting tools to ensure proper lumber dimensions and finish quality
  • Inspect and verify finished lumber for accuracy, grade, and surface quality
  • Troubleshoot planer machine issues including feed problems, vibration, chatter marks, snipe, and dimensional inconsistencies
  • Identify and correct machine defects such as bearing wear, alignment issues, cutter head imbalance, and feed roll problems
  • Work closely with maintenance and production teams to minimize downtime
  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on planer equipment
  • Adjust machine settings for different lumber sizes and species (preferably pine)
  • Monitor machine performance and recommend improvements for efficiency and quality
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area in compliance with sawmill safety standards
  • Follow all lockout/tagout and safety procedures
