About The Position

Join the Facilities Management Department at the University of Colorado Denver as a Pipe/Mechanical Trades I employee. This is a full-time, state-classified position that plays a vital role in supporting the University’s 24/7 operations. In this position, you will perform routine and corrective maintenance on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and utility systems, as well as interior finishes and appliances. You will coordinate work with journey-level technicians and contractors, log all work activities in the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance System), and monitor building operations through the BAS (Building Automation System).This role also requires responding to service calls, addressing maintenance issues as they arise, and ensuring a safe and functional campus environment. The position is subject to mandatory call-back for snow removal services and may perform other related duties as assigned. This is a day, first-shift position. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Employees in this role are responsible for performing both corrective and preventive maintenance during their shift and may be required to respond to after-hours or emergency call-backs as needed.

Requirements

  • At least two years of progressively responsible experience in building maintenance or facilities operations.
  • Hands-on experience performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and lighting systems.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing interior building finishes (e.g., doors, walls, ceilings, flooring, or fixtures).
  • Proficiency with computers and basic computer functions for data entry and maintenance documentation.
  • Successful completion of a formal apprenticeship program in plumbing, pipefitting, steam fitting, or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), or higher-level non-correspondence coursework in these fields from an accredited vocational school or university may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Colorado law requires that candidates for state government jobs be residents of Colorado at the time of application.
  • Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Experience working in a higher education or institutional facilities environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, mechanical, and utility systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair building equipment, appliances, and interior finishes to maintain safe and efficient operations.
  • Conduct routine inspections of mechanical rooms, equipment, and building systems to identify and address issues.
  • Monitor and adjust BAS (Building Automation Systems) for comfort, energy efficiency, and equipment protection.
  • Assist journey-level technicians and contractors by preparing work areas, gathering materials, and coordinating tasks.
  • Respond to service requests and work orders in a timely manner using CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
  • Document all work performed through electronic records, reports, and supervisor communication.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safe conditions in mechanical spaces and work sites.
  • Perform snow removal, ice treatment, and seasonal maintenance to ensure campus safety.
  • Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements while using PPE and proper tools.
  • Provide support during building emergencies, including power outages, floods, and equipment failures.
  • Participate in mandatory call-back rotations and after-hours response to urgent facility needs.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to improve efficiency and service delivery.
  • Operate university vehicles and equipment safely when transporting tools, supplies, and materials.
