Carpenter Co. has an opening for a Technician at our Reinhart Technical Center's Pilot Plant in Richmond, Virginia under the Research & Development umbrella. The Pilot Plant Technician will perform basic operations and experiments, including operating one or more pilot-scale chemical reactors and gathering data. This position will work closely with Chemists and Scientists on specific tasks to help develop an understanding of chemical processes and products. Carpenter Co. employees are committed to working hard to ensure production goals are met while maintaining operations excellence. As the successful candidate, you will be expected to support the development and production of new products and processes by operating pilot plant equipment. You will also assist with data collection, documentation, and record-keeping to ensure process optimization and scaling. Your additional responsibilities as Pilot Plant Technician will include:

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • 3+ years if experience in a pilot plant or chemical manufacturing environment, required.
  • An understanding and appreciation for standard laboratory and safety practices.
  • Ability to work 10-hour day shifts.
  • Willingness to train on new chemical processing equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Ability to interact well with all levels of the organization; maintain strong relationships with team members, peers and internal customers.
  • Functional knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent mechanical aptitude preferred.
  • Experience operating Forklifts and working in areas with forklift traffic, highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of a Chemist, Scientist, Engineer, or Pilot Plan Supervisor, help support and conduct lab-and-pilot-scale R D experiments.
  • Operate lab scale chemical processing equipment as well as the Pilot Plant equipment such as reactors, pumps, valves, and instruments.
  • Monitor operating parameters in order to produce quality products for R D purposes.
  • Manually measure quantities of chemical additives and raw materials with precision; mix components together.
  • Charge chemicals to reactors and other process equipment via manual addition, or pumping in from drums or totes.
  • Assist in maneuvering materials in totes, drums, and other containers.
  • Assist with maintenance on equipment as well as installation of new equipment.
  • Participate in familiarization and scale-up equipment for new chemical processes; contribute to the R D understanding of new processes and technologies.
  • Log process data to ensure good record keeping and to allow troubleshooting of process issues.
  • Collect and log samples; submit for analytical testing to generate data in support of R D projects.
  • Safely and responsibly handle hazardous chemicals during processing and maintenance activities, using appropriate PPE.
  • Maintain a tidy and organized workspace; help manage chemical and equipment inventory.
  • Support commissioning of new equipment and development of new R D processes, as applicable.
