About The Position

The Piano Technician will be primarily responsible for tuning the pianos utilized at performances and events in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts facilities. The Piano Technician will make minor adjustments to the tension of a piano's strings, aligning the intervals between their tones so that the instrument is in tune

Requirements

  • Ability to tune, regulate and voice a piano to exact specifications; ability to inspect and diagnose problems, and make minor repairs to pianos and related instruments; ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • A thorough knowledge of the principles of design, construction and mechanical operation of pianos; ability to tune, regulate and voice a piano to the exact tonal qualities and touch desired by various individual pianists; and ability to overhaul and rebuild pianos.
  • Two years of experience in tuning and repairing pianos, harpsichords, and related instruments; as well as two years of experience in overhauling and rebuilding pianos.
  • Completion of a formal training program which provides the individual with the knowledges and abilities required of the position may be substituted for the two years of general tuning and repairing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Piano maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Assessing the physical status of the piano.
  • Evaluate the sound quality by playing the instrument.
  • Tuning pianos by tightening or loosening strings with a tuning hammer.
  • Conducting post-tuning sound assessments.
  • Ensuring the artist is satisfied with the sound quality
  • Demonstrate behaviors that are in line with the User-Friendly Principles (P530C) and Principles of Conduct for a Multi-Cultural University (P30D)
  • Demonstrate safe work practices for oneself, others, and the office environment.
  • Other duties as assigned.
