About The Position

The duties for this professional faculty position fall into two categories: teaching and citizenship. While the exact percentages will likely vary over time due to the needs of the department, the initial estimate is 80% teaching and 20% citizenship.

Requirements

  • Masters in physics or astronomy or related field. PhD preferred.
  • The required degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Demonstration of high aptitude in teaching physics at all levels for a physics and astronomy bachelor degree.
  • Must reside in the State of Utah to be eligible for employment consideration.
  • All new employees who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be required to hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.
  • All faculty are required to abide by the university’s Honor Code and Dress & Grooming Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate physics and astronomy courses, experimental and computational lab courses, and physical science courses, which are intellectually enlarging, spiritually strengthening, and character building.
  • Develop course materials including syllabi, lectures, discussion materials, assignments and assessments that are aligned with department and course learning outcomes and the aims of a BYU education.
  • Incorporate inclusive, evidence-based, and active learning strategies in course delivery that promote student growth and habits supportive of lifelong learning.
  • Provide academic support to students through regular office hours, feedback, and mentorship to encourage students to reach their divine potential.
  • Participate in course and curriculum development and assessment activities in the department.
  • Mentor student teaching assistants through supervision and training in course content and in facilitating effective learning strategies in recitation sections, lab sections, and large help settings.
  • Under the direction of the Department Chair, contribute to the administrative councils and committees in the department.
  • Contribute to the overall sense of support, belonging, and peacemaking in the department.
  • Participate in University committees, if requested.
