About The Position

This part-time Physician position is located at Caroline Correctional Unit # 2. The role involves providing professional medical care and medication management to offenders, supported by a Nurse Manager and nursing staff. Key responsibilities include analyzing and interpreting patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, and diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses, and treating acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, or injuries. The Physician recommends diagnostic or therapeutic interventions, prescribes medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost, and may prescribe chemical or mechanical measures to assist offenders in improving behaviors. The role also involves assisting with the preparation and modification of treatment plans, recommending appropriate programs, and educating patients on self-management of acute or chronic illnesses with evidence-based health education. This position is a primary member of the institution’s internal health services multidisciplinary team. It is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, with an average of no more than 29 hours per week. No state benefits are offered with this position.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited medical college
  • Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Virginia
  • Board eligible or certified in a primary care specialty
  • Extensive knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities (including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria
  • Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions appropriate for the assigned population
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional medical care and medication management to offenders with assistance from nursing staff

  • Assist with preparation and modification of the treatment plans and recommend appropriate programs
  • Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients’ individual circumstances
  • Provide evidence-based health education to the offender population
  • Function as one of the primary members of the institution’s internal health services multidisciplinary team
