The Physician provides comprehensive medical care to patients in a correctional healthcare setting, including diagnosing and treating patients, while managing a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions. The Physician will also collaborate with nursing and other healthcare staff to develop and implement treatment plans, prescribe medications, and ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care and document promptly and properly. As a physician you will report clinically to our Chief Medical Officer. You are not required to work weekends or on company recognized holidays. You will have a dedicated nurse when you see patients. You will have autonomy to refer individuals to specialists as needed. We use a very generous formulary that allows you to prescribe the appropriate medications based solely on your judgment. You will work alongside a skilled and experienced Nurse Practitioner. We have comprehensive Nursing Guidelines that Nurses use when screening individual patients before you see them. The detention center is staffed by licensed healthcare professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All behavioral and mental health patients are diagnosed and managed by our Licensed Mental Health clinicians and our Psychiatrist. The medical department of the detention center has protocols and guidelines for management of individuals who arrive at the jail and might be withdrawing from alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines or other illicit substances. Medical support staff members will work to obtain offsite medical records to help complete H&Ps. Our EMR system is very user-friendly with dedicated, in-house support to help train and troubleshoot any issues as needed. The headache of dealing with patient insurance disappears. No Prior Authorizations, no Denials, no Appeals, no waiting on reimbursement, no collections. Any areas where you may see patients is staffed by security personnel 24/7, including the medical unit. Most new arrivals to the detention center will be bonded (or otherwise released) within their first week of detention. MEDIKO provides you with training and orientation to correctional medicine by Physicians and other staff that have decades of experience in this field. We provide and pay for your Professional Liability Insurance ("malpractice") with Retro coverage (formerly known as "tail" coverage). Requirements

• A current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of North Carolina (MD or DO).
• Trained in a primary care discipline such as Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or similar.
• Must hold (or be willing to obtain) current and valid DEA registration. (MEDIKO will reimburse you for this Credential.)
• Active CPR/BLS certificate required prior to Start Date (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved).

Responsibilities

• Provide Comprehensive Medical Care: Deliver high-quality, evidence-based medical care to incarcerated individuals.
• Medical Assessments and Diagnosis: Conduct thorough medical assessments, including physical exams and health histories, to diagnose and develop individualized treatment plans for patients. Address both acute and chronic medical conditions, offering appropriate interventions and medications.
• Prescribe Medications and Treatments: Prescribe medications, therapies, and other medical interventions as necessary, ensuring safe and effective treatment for patients. Monitor and adjust treatment plans based on patient progress and evolving health needs.
• Collaborate with Healthcare Team: Work closely with physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated, holistic care for inmates. Participate in case discussions and treatment plan development, ensuring a collaborative approach to patient care.
• Mental Health Support: Provide medical care for patients with mental health conditions, working in collaboration with mental health specialists to ensure the best outcomes for individuals with dual medical and psychiatric diagnoses.
• Emergency Care and Crisis Intervention: Respond to and manage medical emergencies, including trauma, psychiatric crises, and other urgent health situations, ensuring immediate, effective interventions. Provide leadership in emergency medical responses.
• Health Education and Patient Advocacy: Educate patients on managing chronic conditions, preventing health issues, and understanding treatment plans. Advocate for inmate health needs and contribute to a supportive environment for all individuals in care.
• Maintain Patient Records and Documentation: Accurately document all patient interactions, assessments, diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes in accordance with facility protocols and HIPAA regulations. Ensure documentation is complete, timely, and compliant with legal and regulatory standards.
• Quality Improvement and Policy Adherence: Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and clinical outcomes. Adhere to infection control, safety, and security protocols while maintaining high standards of care within the correctional environment.
• Staff Education and Mentorship: Provide education, mentorship, and guidance to healthcare staff, including physicians, nurses, and other providers, on best practices, medical protocols, and evolving standards of care.
• Leadership in Healthcare Operations: Serve as a medical leader within the facility, supporting and mentoring other healthcare providers. Assist in identifying opportunities for improving care delivery, workflow, and the overall healthcare environment.
• On-Call and After-Hours Care: Provide on-call services as needed, including after-hours and weekend care, to ensure continuity of care and address urgent healthcare needs of inmates.
• Collaboration with Correctional Staff: Work alongside correctional officers and facility leadership to ensure that the healthcare needs of inmates are met while maintaining security and safety within the correctional setting. Address any barriers to care resulting from the correctional environment.
• Compliance with Legal and Ethical Standards: Uphold the highest standards of professional ethics, ensuring that all medical practices comply with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as institutional policies. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and follow all legal and ethical guidelines in healthcare delivery.
