About The Position

The Physician position at CVHS in Petersburg, VA is a full-time role focused on providing primary medical care. This includes examining, diagnosing, and treating patients, utilizing laboratory and x-ray diagnostic tests, performing minor surgical procedures, and prescribing medication. The physician will also refer patients for specialized consultations when necessary and provide medical supervision to other health professionals. Key responsibilities involve participating in preventive health programs, adhering to CVHS policies, leading clinical staff in a patient-centered model, and maintaining professional competence through continuing education. The role requires participation in an on-call rotation, including after-hours, weekend, and holiday coverage. The practice is described as high-volume and offers a team-oriented work environment, utilizing an eClinicalWorks EHR system. The position is eligible for National Health Service Corps loan repayment and Public Service Loan Forgiveness.

  • Doctor of Medicine degree from an AMA certified school of medicine or a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an AOA approved school of osteopathy.
  • Successful completion of a residency program in a primary care discipline (family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics).

Responsibilities

  • Conducts a program of primary medical care which provides for the examination, diagnosis and treatment of CVHS patients.
  • Provides medical treatment and advice to patients as may be indicated.
  • Obtain past medical history and review pertinent medical records.
  • Examines patients, utilizes laboratory and x-ray diagnostic tests, interpreting findings for differential diagnosis; diagnoses ailment(s) and performs necessary treatment including minor surgical procedures, carrying out such follow-up treatment as may be medically indicated.
  • Refers for consultation to medical, surgical or other health services those patients he/she is not qualified to treat or for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment procedures.
  • Prescribes and/or dispenses required medication to patients.
  • Seeks advice and consultation from more senior and experienced physicians as required.
  • Provides medical supervision to the assigned staff of other health professionals.
  • When requested, perform peer supervisory duties including peer review of medical documentation.
  • Directs, organizes, and participates in preventive health programs such as immunization, disease detection and disease prevention activities.
  • Provides health consultation to community groups in the designated area.
  • Adheres to the provisions in his/her CVHS contract.
  • Leads and supports clinical staff in creating and maintaining a team-based patient-centered medical practice model.
  • Assists all CVHS health professionals to function according to their professional standards of practice.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Abides by the CVHS Bylaws and Principles of Practice.
  • Maintains high standards of personal and professional behavior in connection with his/her position at the CVHS.
  • Maintains a good program of continuing professional education to keep his/her medical knowledge and professional competence at an acceptable level.
  • Provides after hours, weekend and Holiday coverage in rotation with the other providers.
  • This coverage will include being available for phone consultation or, as appropriate, meeting the patient at CVHS care sites.
  • Submit and complete appropriate and timely documentation into the electronic health record.
  • Complete coding and billing functions in the electronic health record in a timely fashion.
  • Follow CVHS security protocols regarding the use of electronic devices utilized in patient care.
  • Participate in committees deemed necessary and relevant to the CVHS mission.
  • Attends work as scheduled.
  • Performs other duties connected with his/her CVHS position as assigned by the Clinical Director and/or Regional Medical Officer.
