This position provides supervision and leadership of the MEH Hospitalist program in addition to direct patient care. The LPH provides comprehensive health care services for inpatients and emergency patients at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital and serves as a community liaison and referral physician for communities and clinics throughout Southeast Alaska. This position requires prioritization of multiple clinical and administrative duties. Duties include program planning and development, scheduling, supervision of clinical staff, and performance improvement activities. Clinical work involves high level medical decision making for patients of all ages in the Emergency Room and inpatient settings. The LPH may cover multiple areas of the facility at the same time and is responsible for all patients on the premises. The incumbent works to ensure that health care delivered throughout the facility is of the highest quality from the individual provider and system levels.

Requirements

M.D. or D.O. degree, along with satisfactory completion of an accredited Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, or Emergency Medicine residency. Certification by the American Board of Family Practice, the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Pediatrics, or the American Board of Emergency Medicine is also acceptable.
Current and valid Alaska Medical License issued by the Alaska State Medical Board.
BLS, ACLS, PALS, ATLS Required
Specialized knowledge applicable to emergency medicine, such as airway and trauma management.
Familiarity with performance improvement concepts and procedures.
Oral and written communication.
Clinical judgment to assess complex situations and make appropriate clinical decisions.
Skills appropriate for emergencies, such as intubation skills and cardiac resuscitation.
Supervision.
Gather and analyze information and use it to make appropriate clinical diagnosis and therapeutic decisions.
Demonstrate knowledge of allopathic theories and therapies.
Order diagnostic tests effectively and efficiently.
Work independently.

Responsibilities

Provides appropriate clinical health care services to the Emergency Room, Medical-Surgical, and Critical Care patients of Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital. Care includes evaluations, clinical assessments, and development of treatment plans. Includes delivery of health care services to patients of all ages, including newborn, infant, child, adolescent, pregnant, adult, and geriatric patients. Inpatient work includes active, observation, and swing bed patients.
Ensures continual coverage of the MEH hospitalist program scheduling 2-3 months in advance. Provides direct clinical and administrative supervision of the other hospitalist staff inclusive of annual evaluations, OPPE/FPPE activities, and PA collaborative plans. Develops policies and procedures and clinical protocols for the inpatient and ER settings as necessary. Provides leadership of provider and multidisciplinary inpatient activities. Represents the hospitalist program in interactions with administration, other MEH departments, and the primary care clinics.
Participate in all medical staff functions as requested, to include quality assurance reviews and meetings.
Serves as consultative liaison to village health care providers and referral physicians throughout Southeast Alaska.
Abides by medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, and clinical services policies/procedures.
