About The Position

Position is assigned to the Health Services Section with Department of Adult Corrections. The primary purpose of this position is to provide health care services for the offender population at the facilities. Duties will include one or more designated institutions in the Central Region. • Perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under general supervision of a primary sponsoring NC licensed physician. • Perform physical exams on offenders entering or re-entering the prison system; order appropriate x-rays, lab work, etc., admit patients to the hospital when instructed after consulting with physician; maintain medical records of all patients seen and/or treated. • Coordinate and cooperate with nursing services in rendering appropriate health care; see offender patients in medical clinics, attend staff conferences; keep attending physicians aware of medical actions at all times; perform specific clinical duties with supervision under sponsoring physician’s instruction and direction. • Discuss with and counsel patients regarding illness or injury. • Write prescriptions and adjust medication according to therapeutic objectives explain treatment to nursing and other staff personnel; cooperate with other staff providers. • Must be willing to take primary call (with secondary coverage by physician) on a scheduled basis.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant by the North Carolina Medical Board or approved to practice as a Nurse Practitioner by the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Medical Board.
