About The Position

The Chair of Anesthesiology provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for AtlantiCare Medical Center's Department of Anesthesiology. This leader is responsible for overseeing the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient anesthesia services across surgical, procedural, and critical care settings. The Chair partners with hospital administration, perioperative nursing, and surgical leadership to optimize perioperative workflows, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and promote a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology or equivalent.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the State of New Jersey.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive clinical and leadership experience in anesthesiology within a tertiary or academic medical center.
  • Demonstrated success in operational management, quality improvement, and physician engagement.
  • Experience in perioperative governance, financial stewardship, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Strong leadership presence with ability to influence across clinical and administrative domains.
  • Deep understanding of perioperative operational metrics and clinical workflow optimization.
  • Excellent communication, conflict resolution, and organizational management skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the strategic vision for the Department of Anesthesiology in alignment with AtlantiCare's organizational goals and clinical priorities.
  • Lead department faculty and staff to advance patient safety, quality outcomes, throughput efficiency, and satisfaction for both patients and physicians.
  • Serve as the primary physician leader for integrated perioperative governance, participating in surgical services committees, quality councils, and executive operations meetings.
  • Provide visible leadership that fosters engagement, accountability, and professional development among anesthesia providers.
  • Oversee the clinical performance and workload distribution of anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and advanced practice providers across main ORs, ambulatory surgery centers, procedural suites, labor and delivery, and off-site anesthesia locations.
  • Collaborate with perioperative administrators to manage case scheduling, block utilization, turnover times, and resource allocation.
  • Maintain active clinical practice, modeling best practices in patient management, procedural safety, and anesthesia techniques.
  • Oversee credentialing, privileging, and peer review processes in accordance with Joint Commission and hospital standards.
  • Drive performance improvement initiatives focused on outcomes such as postoperative complications, anesthesia-related events, and recovery metrics.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and billing requirements governing anesthesiology services.
  • Lead departmental morbidity and mortality reviews, quality assurance programs, and anesthesia safety initiatives.
  • Partner with risk management and quality departments to implement evidence-based practices and reduce variability in clinical care.
  • Promote academic and professional growth opportunities for physicians, CRNAs, and residents or fellows (if applicable).
  • Support continuing medical education activity and quality-focused learning within the department.
  • Partner with medical staff leadership to sustain high standards of clinical competency and professional conduct.
  • Collaborate with finance and operations to develop budgets, monitor key performance indicators, and achieve productivity and efficiency targets.
  • Evaluate and manage resource needs, staffing models, and service expansion opportunities.
  • Lead recruitment, retention, and succession planning for anesthesia providers in collaboration with human resources and physician recruitment.
  • Serve as an active member of the Medical Executive Committee, Credentials Committee, and other hospital leadership forums.
  • Partner with service line leadership (Surgical Services, Cardiac, Critical Care, Obstetrics) to coordinate integrated care delivery across specialties.
  • Support system-wide initiatives related to access, growth, perioperative optimization, and patient experience.
