About The Position

This innovative opportunity is for an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to collaborate with attending hospitalists on the Hospital Medicine Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital. This opportunity includes direct patient care from admission to discharge and a cross-coverage model for general inpatient medicine patients and subspecialty services. Each APP will follow 6 patients on average, with one admission per day. The APP promotes a collaborative relationship and effort between the hospitalists, private physicians, nurses, and the remainder of the interdisciplinary health care team. Applicants for this position should be patient-centered, motivated, and energetic clinicians that want to be part of a large academic team with MD/DO colleagues and NP/PA peers. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter and able to respond, triage, and systematically care for both non-urgent and acute issues that arise in our patients. The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Physician Assistant required
  • Physician Assistant, MA
  • Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant preferred
  • Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • General medical inpatient or ICU experience is preferred for experienced APPs; however, those with other APP experience may be considered.
  • All new graduates MUST include their clinical rotations in their resumes and should include prior work experience.
  • If a new graduate, then you must be in good standing to complete your degree.
  • NPs: A minimum of two years of inpatient RN experience is strongly preferred for new graduate NPs and ICU experience is a plus.
  • PAs: An inpatient medicine rotation at a large academic center or level 1 trauma center is preferred though candidates with other inpatient and/or ICU clinical rotations may be considered.
  • Must possess the ability to care for critically ill adult patients with a broad range of medical problems.
  • Display maturity and self-confidence to follow patients with a complex management plan.
  • Obtain accurate patient history, perform comprehensive physical exams, diagnose and treat health problems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
  • Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
