About The Position

We are seeking a Physician Assistant Resident for the Duke Physician Assistant Surgical Residency Program located in Durham, NC. The Physician Assistant Resident is involved in a 13-month intensive training program administered by the Department of Surgery at Duke University Medical Center. Physician Assistant Residents are credentialed as full members of the medical team and are involved in all aspects of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic patient care. The Resident will attend lectures, seminars, and skills laboratories and participate in clinical, hands-on patient care with appropriate oversight by the supervising physician and staff advanced practice providers. Requirements

  • Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Master's degree is required
  • BLS required.
  • ACLS required within 3 months of hire.
  • Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with attending physician(s), provides direct clinical services for perioperative patients according to established protocols and utilizing evidence-based clinical practice standards.
  • Performs triage, physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures, and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care of patients, and provides direct patient care services.
  • Formulates and implements treatment plans for acute illness management in collaboration with the attending physician(s).
  • Analyzes clinical practice patterns so to provide the best medical care and to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Communicates verbally and in writing all pertinent patient information to the supervising MD, nursing staff, patient resource manager, home health agency, and other relevant healthcare providers.
  • Provides timely documentation in the electronic medical record including daily notes, history and physicals, discharge summaries
  • Attend lectures, seminars, and skills labs that have been designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of various disease processes. Instruction will cover both general and subspecialty topics. Emphasis will be placed on didactic and clinical training in general surgery, which will allow the resident to gain more autonomy as they master evaluation skills, knowledge of disease processes, and become competent in procedures necessary to practice in surgery as an advanced practice provider.
  • In addition to classroom/laboratory instruction, the clinical curriculum will include attending weekly conferences organized by the Department of Surgery.
  • Clinical curriculum duties will include history and physical examinations, writing patient orders and progress notes in the hospital record, responding to and evaluating patient problems, ordering diagnostic studies, and performing invasive procedures with appropriate competence checks and oversight by the supervising physician and/or designated back-up physicians.
