Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved Physical Therapist Assistant program or equivalent with Associate’s of Applied Science in Physical Therapist Assistant
  • Licensed or license-eligible by NY state as a Physical Therapy Assistant.
  • CPR certification within the first three months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of up to two years of education, training and clinical experience in an outpatient setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Follows specific treatment procedures as directed by the supervising physical therapist, including preparing the patient for treatment, informing and educating the patient in treatment indications and contraindications, performing treatment procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of rehabilitation equipment.
  • May administer standardized, structured tests under the supervision of a physical therapist.
  • Maintains accurate records of each patient’s treatment, progress, and/or regression according to the Service Delivery Standard using paper and electronic systems, as necessary.
  • Maintains all necessary records required to meet the criteria established by reimbursement and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Engages in consultation with the primary Physical Therapist as to any changes in the patient’s condition or response to treatment which may warrant re-evaluation, alteration of the established treatment program or goals, or further medical evaluation.
  • Submits billing for each patient treated in accordance with established UHS policy in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assists the Physical Therapist with discharge planning and patient/family education upon a patient’s discharge from treatment.
  • Assists Site Manager/Physical Therapist in influencing patient care and accountability.
  • Understands and complies with all emergency/crisis management issues.
  • Attends and participates in all clinical in-service, SGRs, and all required continuing education courses in accordance with the state laws and UHS requirements.
  • Acts in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) while performing all assigned duties.
  • Maintains the facility in a clean and organized fashion throughout the day.
  • Collaborates with other professional staff such as physical therapists, and co-treats, as required, assisting the occupational and physical therapist in assessments of patients.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationship with patients, their families, and other staff personnel.
  • Participates in patient care conferences with other professionals involved in the management of cases.
  • Provides patient/family education, as needed.
  • Collaborates with the physical therapist, participates in planning decisions for patient’s post discharge placement.
  • Makes appropriate referrals and follows up to ensure proper placement and programming of patient.
  • Interfaces with vendor to provide needed durable medical equipment.
  • Provides direction to departmental aides as related to treatment, Volunteers, PTA Students.
  • Has knowledge of and participates in department and organizational initiatives for performance improvement (PI).
  • Pursues professional development and contributes to department learning.
  • Meets defined individual and departmental productivity targets as defined by clinical service areas.
  • Comply with proper hand hygiene protocols to ensure patient safety.
  • Maintains necessary CEU’s for licensure and/ or specialty certifications and professional organizations.
  • Participates in patient care conferences as assigned.
