About The Position

Sela was founded to dismantle educational inequity, racial segregation, and cultural isolation. The school provides a space where students are celebrated as they begin their journey as global citizens, serving over 280 students from Pre-K3 through 5th grade in Washington, D.C. As the Physical Education Teacher, the role involves serving as a "specials" lead within a 50/50 English-Hebrew immersion model. The teacher will spearhead PE instruction for grades K-5, promoting physical literacy, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles. While primary instruction is in English, the teacher will work in a unique linguistic environment, collaborating with Hebrew-language staff to ensure a seamless, inclusive experience for a diverse student body.

Responsibilities

  • Design DC Standards-aligned PE lesson plans that challenge students’ motor skills and coordination while accommodating diverse physical abilities.
  • Maintain an inviting, high-energy environment (gym or outdoor space) through effective movement-based classroom management.
  • Use informal and formal assessments of motor skills and social-emotional growth to tailor instruction.
  • Partner with Hebrew and English teachers to align schedules and integrate school-wide themes into physical activity.
  • Foster an inclusive athletic environment where every child, regardless of athletic background or ability, feels empowered to participate.
  • Plan and deliver standards-aligned physical education that supports student engagement, rigor, and differentiated movement.
  • Develop instructional materials and games that promote sportsmanship, conflict resolution, and teamwork.
  • Establish clear, measurable physical development goals and regularly evaluate student progress.
  • Participate in collaborative planning to ensure PE supports the broader school culture.
  • Create a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for physical activity.
  • Implement management practices that promote positive behavior during high-energy transitions and competitive play.
  • Foster student voice and independent problem-solving during team-based activities.
  • Ensure equitable access to equipment and athletic resources for all learners.
  • Collaborate with special education teachers and support staff to provide adaptive PE for students with specific physical or developmental needs.
  • Use performance data to identify gaps in motor development and provide appropriate interventions.
  • Implement accommodations as required by IEPs, 504 Plans, or SST recommendations to ensure full participation in physical activity.
  • Communicate with families regarding student progress, physical milestones, and school-wide wellness initiatives (e.g., Field Day).
  • Participate in parent-teacher conferences and family engagement nights.
