About The Position

Join Geisinger’s School of Phlebotomy as a paid student phlebotomist! The next cycle of the School of Phlebotomy begins on April 20, 2026 The School of Phlebotomy is a comprehensive training program where the employed student phlebotomist will learn to perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens on all age groups, from children to adults. Training occurs through didactic and clinical rotations covering the procedures that phlebotomists must perform, as well as the roles that phlebotomists play in the health care arena. They will gain the knowledge to perform a wide range of tasks in order to be responsible and accountable for providing specimens of the highest analytical quality for testing.

  • Students should have reliable transportation to class as well as to clinic sites.
  • Upon acceptance to the school, students will be required to undergo the established Geisinger onboarding process which includes completing a background check, meeting with employee health (includes a nicotine and drug screen), and providing references.

Responsibilities

  • Trained to perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to prescribed procedures; know adequate and correct collection requirements and perform accessioning procedures appropriately and accurately to ensure positive identification of the specimens.
  • Trained to exhibit accuracy in specimen identification, labeling, accessioning, processing, and patient billing.
  • Trained to provide timely transport of a specimen to the appropriate specimen processing or analyzing location.
  • Trained to demonstrate good problem-solving skills, recognize discrepancies in patient orders, and resolve or refer problems as appropriate .
  • Trained to evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability, resolve discrepancies as appropriate , and initiate the recollection process as necessary.
  • Trained to accurately process specimens for analysis according to prescribed procedures.
  • Know and abide by Geisinger and Geisinger Medical Laboratories policies and procedures including compliance policies.
  • Completion of School of Phlebotomy coursework within a twelve-week timeframe which includes evaluations and clinical rotations by the Program Director and designated preceptors.
  • Accountable for satisfying all job-specific obligations and complying with all organization policies and procedures.
