About The Position

This position is for a Phlebotomist at St Mary Medical Center, responsible for the collection of blood samples from patients both in-house and for timely delivery to appropriate technical areas for analysis. The role requires an experienced, highly-skilled technician capable of working with minimal supervision, possessing strong interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, colleagues, and visitors. The schedule is Per Diem, providing coverage for shift vacancies as needed. Requirements

  • High School Diploma/Equivalent required
  • Experienced, highly-skilled technician who can work with a minimum of supervision
  • Must have inter-personal skills interacting with patients, colleagues and visitors

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Properly identify outpatients by verbal confirmation and positive identification system
  • Properly identify inpatients using the hospital identification wristband and scanner
  • Properly identify and label patient specimens for Blood Bank testing using the positive patient identification system
  • Properly identify patients and adequately perform venipunctures and/or skin punctures
  • Use appropriate aseptic technique to draw blood cultures
  • Clearly and accurately label all specimens immediately after venipuncture and complete necessary documentation
  • Evaluate specimen adequacy
  • Receive specimens in the computer and deliver them to the appropriate department
  • Monitor inventory levels and follow appropriate protocol for re-ordering supplies
  • Delete or cancel orders as necessary with full documentation of reason and colleague they spoke with
  • Collate requests, answer the telephone, deliver specimens to appropriate department and operate the pneumatic tube
  • Always demonstrate proper telephone etiquette
  • Consistently assume responsibility for calls, correctly answer questions, direct inquiries and take messages
  • Adapt work schedule to meet emergency staffing needs
  • Be responsive, courteous, respectful and cooperative in completing tasks
  • Collect TIMED and STAT tests within designated time period
  • Maintain supplies, carts, workstations in a neat, clean and orderly manner
  • Perform other related duties as required
