About The Position

The Phlebotomist supports all sections of the Clinical Outpatient Laboratory through proper phlebotomy techniques as well as proper specimen accessioning, processing and related activities. This includes the use of correct blood collection tubes, ordering correct tests from requisitions, and matching identifiers to information on requisitions and labels. The role involves obtaining blood from patients using proper phlebotomy techniques for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donation, or research, and resolving specimen and patient problems as they arise. The Phlebotomist must follow all UAMS Department of Pathology Policies and Procedures for blood collection and obtain patient specimens at an acceptable rate. Additionally, this position assists with access coordinator responsibilities, including opening/closing of the clinic, and participates in the training of new employees.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2 years of laboratory experience
  • Superior customer service skills
  • Clear communication skills
  • Ability to show empathy and respect for patients' privacy and autonomy
  • Excellent patient interaction skills in person and by phone
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently

  • Two or more years working in a clinical laboratory or as a medical assistant

Responsibilities

  • Support all sections of the Clinical Outpatient Laboratory through proper phlebotomy techniques, specimen accessioning, processing, and related activities.
  • Use correct blood collection tubes and order correct tests from requisitions.
  • Match identifiers to information on requisition and labels.
  • Obtain blood from patients using proper phlebotomy techniques for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donation, or research.
  • Resolve specimen and patient problems.
  • Follow all UAMS Department of Pathology Policies and Procedures for blood collection.
  • Obtain patient specimens at an acceptable rate.
  • Assist with access coordinator responsibilities, including opening/closing of clinic.
  • Participate in the training of new employees.
  • Use venipuncture to obtain blood specimens from patients.
  • Perform various testing procedures according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare urine and stool samples for laboratory processing.
  • Monitor and maintain an adequate amount of patient care supply inventory.
  • Serve as a resource for the department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
