The Phlebotomist supports all sections of the Clinical Outpatient Laboratory through proper phlebotomy techniques as well as proper specimen accessioning, processing and related activities. This includes using correct blood collection tubes, ordering correct tests from requisitions, and matching identifiers to information on requisitions and labels. The role involves obtaining blood from patients using proper phlebotomy techniques for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donation, or research, and resolving specimen and patient problems as they arise. The Phlebotomist must follow all UAMS Department of Pathology Policies and Procedures for blood collection and obtain patient specimens at an acceptable rate. Additionally, this position assists with access coordinator responsibilities, including opening/closing of the clinic, and participates in the training of new employees.
