About The Position

UPMC Community Osteopathic is hiring a Casual Phlebotomist to work day and evening shifts, including every third weekend and holiday. In this role, you'll perform accurate and timely specimen collection for inpatients and outpatients-supporting quality diagnoses and patient care-while also assisting with essential lab operations such as computer entry, courier duties, and clerical tasks. Working closely with experienced Medical Technologists, you'll play a vital role in delivering excellent laboratory services and patient outcomes. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred.
  • Minimum 6 months experience performing phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Responsibilities

  • Greets and communicates with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally, responding promptly to phone inquiries.
  • Collects blood specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, or fingerstick, and instructs patients on self-collection when needed.
  • Demonstrates reliability, sound judgment, and flexibility in meeting departmental priorities.
  • Performs specimen collection and safe transport from on-site and off-site locations to the laboratory.
  • Adheres to all laboratory and hospital policies, including quality control, safety, hand hygiene, and compliance standards.
  • Completes clerical and computer tasks such as data entry, order processing, and verifying patient and sample information.
  • Trains and orients new staff, students, and residents as assigned.
  • Reports unusual or problematic incidents to technical or supervisory staff promptly.
  • May perform arterial punctures following strict collection and post-collection procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate supply levels and uses materials responsibly to support cost-effective operations.
