About The Position

The Phlebotomist, under the general supervision of the Phlebotomy Coordinator, is responsible for performing venipunctures, capillary blood specimen collections, point of care testing (POCT), and related procedures in accordance with hospital and Department of Laboratory Services policies. This role also involves assisting in the training and guidance of phlebotomy students and new employees, encompassing the internal functioning of the Department and its integration into the overall Northwest Texas Healthcare System. The Phlebotomist is expected to support an organizational culture of Service Excellence and apply these standards to all customer groups. Universal Health Services, Inc. Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent required
  • PBT(ASCP) required or eligible (to be obtained within 12 months of employment)
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association upon hire or within 30 days of start date and maintain certification throughout employment (must be obtained prior to providing patient care)
  • Valid Texas Drivers License with no more then 3 moving violations in the past 3 years
  • Ability to read, write, and converse in English
  • Ability to follow instructions, reason, and make appropriate judgments
  • Ability to perform computer functions accurately and quickly
  • Ability to perceive pertinent details and objects in pictorial or graphic material
  • Ability to perceive pertinent details from verbal and tabular material

  • Ability to understand and explain the theories of laboratory specimen processing
  • Ability to multi-task productively and accurately
  • Ability to remain focused on job responsibilities

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of a phlebotomy program preferred
  • One year of full time experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Practices the profession of phlebotomy in the area(s) of assigned responsibility according to accepted standards of practice as outlined by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), CLIA ’88, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and other regulatory agencies as appropriate, and according to the approved policies and procedures of the organization, department, and/or the laboratory Medical Director.
  • Participates in and supports a process to measure, assess, and performance improvement in areas of assigned responsibility.
  • Performs phlebotomy and waived testing procedures in assign areas of the laboratory, clinics, outreach facilities, health fairs, and home-bound patient locations optimizing the efficiency and quality of pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory procedures.
