About The Position

This position has multiple roles as it is a lead/scheduler trainer position. Scheduler's shifts start at 4:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. with rotating Saturday's and Sunday's. Training schedule hours will vary, dependent on what location(s) the new hire will be covering and can be conducted during site's business hours. Lead schedule will include coordinating with Region Supervisor and other leads to accomplish tasks assigned by department supervisor. This position will also require working as a Phlebotomist as needed at any of the IL Ambulatory locations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Typically requires 3 years of experience in phlebotomy or related laboratory function.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a group of employees.
• Basic computer skills including experience using computer software applications.
• Keyboarding and typing skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Good listening and organizational skills.
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Demonstrated customer service skills to interface effectively with physicians, patients, visitors, and other healthcare employees.
• Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
• Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs. Occasionally lifts up to 50 lbs.
• Must be able to sit, stand, walk and bend the majority of the workday.
• May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, radioactive and/or infectious agents. Will be exposed to human blood and body fluids. Must wear appropriate lab coat, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
• Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.
• May require traveling; therefore may be exposed to inclement weather and adverse road conditions.

Responsibilities

• Acts as a resource to employees and students, which includes training/orienting and providing day-to-day work direction.
• Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, monitors productivity, maintains appropriate staffing levels, directs efforts and provides guidance on more complex issues.
• Assists with human resource responsibilities, which may include interviewing and selection of new employees, staff development, resolution of employee concerns, and employee morale.
• Assists in interpreting department policies and procedures, and advises and updates staff on procedural changes.
• Monitors and coordinates the workflow of the department. This includes specimen collection, processing and ordering functions.
• Answers and appropriately handles telephone calls.
• Assists with inventory and maintains supplies and/or equipment.
• Assists in the investigation of procedure and/or performance failures and aids in their resolution.
• Reviews procedures and reports discrepancies to leadership.
• Reviews various pending and management reports. Generates and distributes reports.
• Documents appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol.
• Verifies positive patient identification to ensure patient safety.
• Performs Venipuncture and collects other specimens from newborn, pediatric, and adult patients according to established protocol.
• Assesses patient reactions to specimen procurement. Obtains medical assistance when judged necessary.
• Obtains specimens according to priority and scheduled draw times.
• Receives and sorts specimens. Packages and tracks specimens for transport.
• Ensures completion of specimen collection functions according to protocol.
• Ensures that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing.
• Resolves specimen identification and/or requisition problems and clarifies orders.
• Accepts specimens from a variety of internal and external customers. Responds to additional specimen procurement requests.
• May perform limited testing under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA),1988 guidelines according to established policies and procedures.
• Runs quality control checks.
• Instructs students in phlebotomy, data entry and specimen processing functions.
• Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
