About The Position

Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Primary responsibility is the provision of medication distributive functions and pharmacy operational tasks, which includes but is not limited to assisting the pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medications, inventory management, and regulatory compliance. Performs duties necessary for the effective daily operation of all departments services and programs. Accurately responds to medication dispensing requests, prepares medication for pharmacist final review/check, delivers checked medications, and returns unused or expired medications to appropriate areas.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Illinois Pharmacy Technician License or within 60 days upon receipt of submission to the state. Note: not applicable for those licensees that are pending licensure reinstatement due to disciplinary action.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician
  • 1 year pharmacy technician experience (Retail/Ambulatory)

Responsibilities

  • Actively performs all pharmacy technician functions and maintains active proficiency in standard work parameters, hospital and pharmacy specific computers systems, and operational programs.
  • Maintains operational knowledge, competency and actively provides coverage on the following when needed: Centralized/Decentralized distributive pharmacy operations.
  • USP Sterile compounding (797/800).
  • Controlled Substance Handling.
  • Participates in appropriate utilization of medication automation, technology, and computer systems.
  • Maintains expertise in electronic health record system and be able to accurately interpret electronic records as needed.
  • Accurately completes medication inventories and accurately prepares and dispenses patient-specific medication doses. Prevents improver drug, dose, dosage form selection, expiration dating, and barcode scanning issues when checking products.
  • Performs oral and injectable compounding.
  • Carries out special projects or assignments as directed by supervisor or manager.
  • Properly process and appropriately dispose of all waste materials, including all levels of hazardous waste, within the department using approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hazardous Medication Spill Kits in the event of a hazardous medication spill.
  • Facilitates medication safety practices by identifying and reporting potential medication errors such as look-alike sound-alike medications.
  • Prepares and delivers medication in an accurate, safe, and timely manner.
  • Mentors new staff and assists with training.
  • Supports and participates in medication-use process improvements led by colleagues and peers.
  • Supports regulatory compliance initiatives and supports institutional accreditation processes.
