About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician 1 assists licensed pharmacists in the practice of pharmacy performing duties such as preparing, filling, and labeling medications for patients in the Medical Center. As patient care assignments dictate, the technician I is responsive to the explicit need of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. When relevant, appropriate standards of practice and sensitivity to the psychosocial needs of these patient populations are exercised. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • Currently State of Illinois Pharmacy Technician licensure required.
  • Completion of an ACPE/ASHP accredited pharmacy technician training program if licensed on or after January 1, 2024.
  • Listed below is the required training program/hours that need to be completed ACPE/ASHP-accredited training
  • 500 hours of on-the-job training that covers items 1-6 of Section 17.1 of the PPA Items 1-6
  • The duties and responsibilities of the technicians and pharmacists.
  • Tasks and technical skills, policies, and procedures.
  • Compounding, packaging, labeling, and storage.
  • Pharmaceutical and medical terminology.
  • Record-keeping requirements.
  • The ability to perform and apply arithmetic calculations.
  • 500 hours of training (work experience and didactic) outlined in section 1330.215 of the rules Individual must have PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) certification or ability to achieve by second license renewal.
  • Ability to effectively follow directions, analyze problems, and interpret analytical data.
  • Strong communication skills with an emphasis on customer service skills.
  • Accountable for own actions, progress, and development.
  • Employees need to be able to work extended hours due to business needs.
  • This position may require up to 10% travel.

Responsibilities

  • Active participation in the Pharmacy Department Technician Career Ladder.
  • Recognizes and identifies various classifications of medications, medication names, dosage forms, and routes of administration.
  • Uses available print and online references as appropriate.
  • Understands the pharmacy workflow for order printing and order filling.
  • Understands the pharmacy workflow for medication returns and medication disposal.
  • Responsible for the accurate filling of medication.
  • Responsible for packing room temperature and cold-chain medications for delivery. Interpretation and understanding of medical abbreviations.
  • Appropriately labels all medication dosage forms including auxiliary labels for expiration and storage as required.
  • Responsible for the accurate and timely filling and delivery of medications for patient pick up and clinic delivery.
  • Ability to utilize technology in the pharmacy including but not limited to Eyecon and Kirby Lester pill counting machines.
  • Responsible for inventory, storage, and supply maintenance of assigned areas.
  • Responsible for knowing the laws and regulations related to controlled substances.
  • Maintains cleanliness of all equipment and work areas.
  • Knowledge of departmental and Medical Center safety practices.
  • Awareness of departmental quality assurance processes.
  • Actively participates in various departmental committees and educational activities as assigned.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
  • Interacts professionally and appropriately with other healthcare professionals and RUMC employees.
  • Demonstrates communication, professional knowledge and technical skill, continuous learning and exhibits a passion for the Rush Mission, Vision and Values according to the Department of Pharmacy Technician Career Ladder expectations.
