About The Position

Stanford Health Care (SHC) is a Level 1 Trauma Center (Adult and Pediatric), Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Comprehensive Cardiac Center, receiving approximately 100,000 annual visits. The emergency department comprises of 66 adult treatment rooms (9 trauma resuscitation bays) and 18 pediatric treatment rooms. Clinical pharmacists at Stanford Health Care cover all acute patient care areas. The emergency department is staffed by an emergency medicine clinical pharmacist 24 hours/7 days a week. The PGY-2 Emergency Medicine (EM) Pharmacy Residency Program at SHC provides specialized, practical pharmacy training in diverse emergency medicine settings that builds on skills gained from a PGY-1 general practice residency. Our goal is to train highly qualified and motivated new practitioners as they develop into the medication experts of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team. This program will prepare the resident to practice evidence-based medicine and be able to make sound decisions for the large variety of cases that present in the emergency department. In addition to clinical practice experiences, the PGY-2 EM resident will have the opportunity to participate in academic activities, which include an optional teaching certificate, precepting pharmacy residents/students, and providing didactic lectures to the Stanford Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The resident will also conduct a research project and engage in leadership development. The SHC PGY-2 EM Residency Program is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). One applicant is accepted per year. A Brief Overview This position ensures the optimal use of medications to treat patients in both acute and ambulatory care settings. The resident is to demonstrate excellence in the provision of training or educational activities for health care professionals and health care professionals in training.

Requirements

  • Completion of a PGY1 general residency.
  • Enrolled in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Residency Match Program.
  • PharmD from an accredited college/university.
  • Licensed by the California Board of Pharmacy at time of hire (or within 30 days if candidate is from out of state, written exceptions will be considered in 30-day increments at the discretion of the Director of Pharmacy).
  • Ability to adapt to and deal with change and ambiguity.
  • Ability to perform routine mathematical calculations; weighing, measuring and documentation with accuracy.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced work environment.
  • Ability to work with devices, information systems, automated and technical equipment utilized in pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
  • Knowledge of influence of patient's age, sex, concomitant disease states, concurrent drug therapy, foods and diagnostic procedures on drug activity and disposition.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements related to areas of functional responsibility.
  • Knowledge of Medical terminology and abbreviations; pharmacology and pharmacological nomenclature; medical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and disease states.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures involved in proper handling and storing of pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pathology, chemistry and mathematics as they relate to pharmacy practice.
  • CA Board of Pharmacy License - Registered Pharmacist required within 30 Days and
  • BLS - Basic Life Support required within 30 Days or
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support required within 30 Days

Responsibilities

  • Attend emergency medicine related committee meetings and teaching sessions.
  • Complete and present a research project at the Western States Conferences and/or other professional meetings/conferences.
  • Participate in teaching activities with PGY1 residents and pharmacy students.
  • Prepare and present drug monograph or medication use evaluation for the Pharmacy & Therapeutic committee.
  • Staff 16 hours per month.
