Rotating - 08 Hour (United States of America) Stanford Health Care is an academic medical center, recognized among the top 10 in the nation for cardiology, heart and vascular surgery by U.S. News & World Report 2023-2024. It is a comprehensive cardiac, stroke, pulmonary hypertension, and adult congenital heart disease care center. Stanford is recognized as an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) center of excellence, and one of the largest and most successful heart transplant and left ventricular assist device (LVAD) programs in the country. Core rotations include: cardiac care unit (CCU) and heart failure I and II, heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support, cardiology transitions of care, cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), clinical research, hyperlipidemia/cardiometabolic Elective rotations may include: emergency medicine, medical intensive care (MICU), inpatient classical hematology, pulmonary hypertension, metabolic health clinic, cardiac electrophysiology clinic, among others. In addition to clinical practice experiences, the PGY-2 cardiology pharmacy resident will have the opportunity to participate in academic activities, which include precepting PGY-1 residents and students as well as providing didactic lectures. The resident will conduct a mentored longitudinal research project and engage in leadership development. After completing this residency, graduates will be equipped active members of an interdisciplinary cardiovascular care team. The SHC residency program is currently in pre-candidate status for accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). A Brief Overview This position ensures the optimal use of medications to treat patients in both acute and ambulatory care settings. The resident is to demonstrate excellence in the provision of training or educational activities for health care professionals and health care professionals in training.

Requirements

  • Completion of a PGY1 general residency.
  • Enrolled in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Residency Match Program.
  • PharmD from an accredited college/university.
  • Licensed by the California Board of Pharmacy at time of hire (or within 30 days if candidate is from out of state, written exceptions will be considered in 30-day increments at the discretion of the Director of Pharmacy).
  • Ability to adapt to and deal with change and ambiguity.
  • Ability to perform routine mathematical calculations; weighing, measuring and documentation with accuracy.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to solve problems and identify solutions.
  • Ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced work environment.
  • Ability to work with devices, information systems, automated and technical equipment utilized in pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
  • Knowledge of influence of patient's age, sex, concomitant disease states, concurrent drug therapy, foods and diagnostic procedures on drug activity and disposition.
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirements related to areas of functional responsibility.
  • Knowledge of Medical terminology and abbreviations; pharmacology and pharmacological nomenclature; medical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and disease states.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures involved in proper handling and storing of pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pathology, chemistry and mathematics as they relate to pharmacy practice.
  • CA Board of Pharmacy License - Registered Pharmacist required within 30 Days and BLS - Basic Life Support required within 30 Days or ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support required within 30 Days

Responsibilities

  • Attend cardiology related committee meetings and teaching sessions.
  • Complete and present a research project at the Western States Conferences and/or other professional meetings/conferences
  • Participate in teaching activities with PGY1 residents and pharmacy students
  • Prepare and present a drug monograph or medication use evaluation for the Pharmacy & Therapeutic committee
  • The pharmacy resident will function as a staff pharmacist as assigned but not to exceed 16 hours per week
