About The Position

The Critical Care PGY2 Pharmacy Resident will be a competent, assertive clinician who will provide pharmaceutical care to critically ill patients in intensive care environments. As a fully integrated and active member of the healthcare team, the pharmacist will consistently achieve optimal drug therapy outcomes in accordance with hospital policies. The pharmacist will provide clinical services to various intensive care units via an organized, 12-month track of clinical rotations. He/she will utilize critical thinking skills and sound knowledge in educating other healthcare professionals, patients, students, and the community on critical care related topics. The pharmacist will demonstrate the ability to evaluate and analyze drug literature and to effectively communicate complex information to a broad audience in both formal and informal presentation settings. He/she will demonstrate a level of personal accountability that is characteristic of professional maturity. Likewise, the pharmacist will demonstrate leadership skills and exhibit a commitment to the profession of critical care pharmacy.

Requirements

  • Pharm.D. or B.S. Degree in pharmacy and completion of a PGY1 pharmacy residency.
  • Must be currently licensed or license eligible to practice pharmacy in the State of Alabama as a pharmacist or pharmacist intern/extern.
  • Must be able to operate computer, calculator, telephone, and other related pharmaceutical equipment.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

Responsibilities

  • Has working knowledge of all State and Federal laws and regulations affecting the practice of pharmacy.
  • Performs full pharmacotherapy assessment of patients in the assigned critical care unit and makes recommendations for optimizations of the medication regimen.
  • Reviews, interprets and processes all written and verbal medication orders.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds with Intensivists.
  • Performs kinetics consults, drug dosing consults and parenteral nutrition consults.
  • Provides drug information to physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other disciplines through direct contact, committee participation and inservice programs.
  • Participates in the efficient and economical use of supplies and resources. Promotes rationale and economic drug use.
  • Monitors the medication use process, on a routine basis and reports inconsistencies to improve medication safety within the hospital.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Performs monthly unit inspections and consults with and advises nursing staff on proper storage and handling of medications including code carts, floor stock and controlled substances.
  • Follows pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Precepts students and PGY1 pharmacy residents during their ICU rotation.
  • Provides immediate, direct supervision by process defined by leadership to unlicensed pharmacy students and interns.
  • Maintains performance, patient and employee satisfaction and financial standards as outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook
  • Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.
  • Performs essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors and employees.
  • Identifies and reduces unsafe practices that may result in harm to patients, visitors and employees.
  • Recognizes and takes appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards to promote safety for patients, visitors and employees.
  • Requires use of electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software and intranet.
  • Must adhere to all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned.
