The Pharmacy Buyer is responsible for the purchase, physical inventory, and return of pharmaceuticals and supplies from wholesalers and manufacturers along with maintaining appropriate documentation of these activities.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Two years of college with appropriate science courses or completion of a technician program, or equivalent experience identified below.
  • Five years as a Pharmacy Technician with hospital background, plus two years purchasing and/or contracting experience.
  • Fulfillment of requirements established by exam, experience or a combination of both.
  • Intimate knowledge of general pharmacy operations.
  • Knowledge of drug names, dosage forms, packaging and storage requirements beyond that of the Pharmacy Technician (working knowledge).
  • Ability to develop written training materials and policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work tactfully and effectively with patients, nursing staff, physicians and all hospital personnel.
  • Intimate knowledge of and experience with purchasing and contracting, preferably of pharmaceuticals.
  • Ability to work effectively with manufacturers’ and wholesalers' representatives.
  • Ability to read, speak, write, understand and follow English verbal and written instruction.
  • Employees in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care and/or service based on the physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area.
  • Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.

  • Associate Arts degree applicable to materials management preferred.
  • Some supervisory or leadership experience desired.

Responsibilities

  • Purchasing pharmaceuticals, including Schedule II drugs, from wholesalers and directly from manufacturers within the terms of any existing contracts.
  • Assisting in negotiations of new contracts for purchase of pharmaceuticals.
  • Meeting with pharmaceutical representatives, wholesalers and manufacturers.
  • Maintaining adequate inventory, including, but not limited to, stocking shelves, procuring inventory and assuring appropriate levels of stock.
  • Compiling and maintaining records of invoices and contracts.
  • Ordering, unpacking, verifying and storing pharmacy supplies and pharmaceutical orders received, and supervising annual physical inventory and report.
  • Ensuring proper charging of floor stock supplies for all departments including any off-site facilities.
  • Reviewing drug recall alerts issued by FDA and responding appropriately.
  • Communicating changes in departmental policies and procedures relating to pharmaceutical purchasing, and assessing compliance with same.
  • Evaluating the efficiency of operational systems and making recommendations for improvement.
  • Commitment to team process and involvement of staff in transformation of work processes at Marin General Hospital.
  • Maintaining records of pharmaceuticals loaned to and borrowed from hospitals and pharmacies.
  • Responsible for returning and disposing of expired pharmaceuticals and obtaining appropriate credits from wholesalers and manufacturers.
