About The Position

PGY1 General Surgery Residents at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Holy Cross Hospital participate in structured programs to develop skills in all six of the general competencies as outlined by the ACGME. Each resident must demonstrate basic competency in these areas. In this role, the General Surgery Resident assists with admissions, consultations, evaluations, diagnosis, pre-operative care, surgical treatment, and post-operative care of patients. These programs run concurrently in their rotation assignments but often involve patient experience on their assigned clinical rotations.

Requirements

  • Education: M.D. or D.O. degree
  • Certification and Licensing: State of Florida license
  • Experience: No experience required
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Performs thorough patient history and physical.
  • Synthesizes data into a problem list and differential diagnosis.
  • Formulates diagnostic and therapeutic plans and performs basic clinical procedures.
  • Demonstrates caring and respectful behavior towards patients.
  • Self-evaluates educational needs and performance.
  • Incorporates relevant feedback and instruction into clinical activities.
  • Facilitates the learning of others on the care team.
  • Uses technology to enhance patient care and medical education.
  • Establishes an effective therapeutic relationship with patients and families.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
  • Coordinate patient care among all members of the health care team
  • Performs admission, consultation, evaluation, diagnosis, surgical treatment, pre-operative care and post-operative care of patients with general surgical problems
  • Manage patients appropriately based on available evidence, sound judgment, and patient preferences
  • Formulate diagnostic and surgical treatment plans independently
  • Use information technology to support patient care decisions
  • Identifies the need for patient education and orders or provides education
  • Develop an advanced understanding of disease states
  • Demonstrate the skill of reading and interpreting the medical literature
  • Develops and maintains a personal program of self-study
  • Efficiently performs in emergency situations
  • Demonstrates applied knowledge base including integration of skills as required through rotation experiences
  • Gain competence in bedside teaching
  • Demonstrates the ability for effective problem identification and resolution as well as the exercise of independent judgment
  • Demonstrates dexterity and competency to perform essential and required procedures and provides complete written documentation of all procedures
  • Sustain a therapeutic relationship with patients
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient and family issues, including age, gender and cultural diversity
  • Present topics informally and formally to groups of learners
  • Develop skills to negotiate
  • Use effective and appropriate non-verbal communications with patients and colleagues
  • Establish a sense of responsibility for a patient population
  • Manage and direct a health care team
  • Develop conflict management skills
  • Work with consultants and other health care teams
  • Comprehensively documents in patients’ charts in a timely and accurate manner
  • Work with ancillary team members to provide high quality, cost effective health care
  • Demonstrates awareness and applies knowledge of quality control measures and risk management skills.
