The Senior Engineer or Scientist plays a supporting role through both individual and team assignments. In many cases, they must apply technical, business, marketing, and sales knowledge to ensure successful outcomes. They should be able to work with and within cross‑functional and cross‑discipline teams. They are able to apply petrochemical and/or refinery process engineering methodologies to understand requirements, definition, analyses, process configuration, and risk management in the development of product and application recommendations. At this level, they may also be recognized as an SME in their area of expertise or discipline and support others with both business and technical mentoring/coaching. This level may also require engagement with customers during the product/application definition and requirements gathering process for troubleshooting, bids, and proposals. At this seniority level, some individuals may be Team Leaders who deliver technically and commercially sound products or services, with guidance, through deploying effective teams from project inception to delivery by setting and meeting project goals and objectives. This level is expected to be experienced and able to work with a high degree of autonomy and initiative. Engineers and Chemists in this role require experienced understanding of petrochemical and refinery process fouling mechanisms and mitigation methods in typical process designs inclusive of olefins steam crackers, butadiene extractive distillation and purification, styrene monomer purification, petroleum refining, etc. Achieving these goals requires understanding of the design, specification, function, and operating parameters of process equipment inclusive of piping, valves, static or rotating equipment, absorbers, filtration, distillation columns, heat exchangers, fired heaters, reactors, instrumentation, etc. In addition to fouling control, understanding of concepts related to process corrosion, emulsions, foaming, and fuel specifications is beneficial. Executes and oversees projects to evaluate and improve the performance, cost, or reliability of existing products, applications, and services, as driven by customers, operations, supply chain, quality, reliability, and product line needs. Advises on design for manufacture, reliability, and product development for ongoing projects.
