A perfusionist works alongside the surgical team to care for people undergoing a heart procedure or those with critical illnesses requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Perfusionists operate equipment that externally and temporarily replaces or assists the heart and lungs. Set up and operates heart/lung machines that support organ function during cardiac surgery or other procedures where circulatory or respiratory function is disrupted. Operates equipment to produce bypasses, coronary perfusion, recirculation or partial bypasses, or to alter blood temperature, balance, or content. Perfusionists are highly trained and certified medical professionals responsible for the planning, preparation, and operation of cardiopulmonary bypass, mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal support technologies, and blood conservation strategies as well as the hematologic, hemodynamic, physiologic, anesthetic, and biochemical monitoring and treatment of patients and organs during such procedures.
