About The Position

Children’s Minnesota is one of the largest pediatric health systems in the United States, providing care exclusively to children from before birth through young adulthood. The organization is an independent, not-for-profit system operating since 1924, serving the Upper Midwest with two free-standing hospitals, nine primary care clinics, multiple specialty clinics, and seven rehabilitation sites. The neonatal program at Children’s Minnesota is the largest in the Midwest, offering comprehensive intensive care for infants. The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the Minneapolis Campus is an inter-disciplinary team of over 500 professionals dedicated to babies with life-changing diagnoses. It specializes in Level III and Level IV intensive care for infants born prematurely or with birth defects, congenital heart disease, genetic disorders, medical disorders, or those needing ECMO, body cooling, or surgery. The unit provides complex care including hemodynamic monitoring, critical medication management, systemic perfusion maintenance, and organ failure management. It is part of the Mother Baby Center in Minneapolis at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, which includes a high-risk delivery service, a fetal surgery program, and a perinatal clinic. The Minneapolis NICU is a 44-bed Level III and Level IV unit, supported by a step-down Level II infant care center and special care nursery. The team emphasizes a balance of technical skills with a family-centered approach, promoting teamwork, open communication, and professional growth. This Per Diem RN position involves coordinating and providing family-centered nursing care to infants, children, and adolescents using the nursing process. The role requires accountability for professional practice, including independent nursing functions and delegated medical functions performed in collaboration with other health team members. This is an MNA contract position.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Minnesota RN licensure.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current (minimum of 1 year within the last 2 years) NICU experience which includes ability to care for infants: requiring assisted ventilation, surgical cases per and post op, and pre-term infants where strong knowledge of developmental care is expected.
  • Float Team or PICU RNs who are able to demonstrate Neonatal Competencies with these same patient types will be evaluated and considered to meet Level 3 qualifications.
  • An informational meeting with the Patient Care Manager is required prior to awarding the position.
  • Based upon the unit in which you are applying, additional certification(s) may be required. Department specific required qualifications need to be obtained within 6 months of employment.
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required or obtained during orientation.
