About The Position

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks accomplished UMGC students and alumni to work online as part-time peer tutors for UMGC undergraduate students. Tutoring is offered in a variety of ways, including real-time audio and live chat sessions using the Tutor.com platform, which students can access from their classrooms, and scheduled visual conferencing via Zoom sessions, which students can attend. COURSES TO BE SUPPORTED UNDER THIS POSITION: Java and/or Python

Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge in the Java and/or Python programming languages
  • Good organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to work closely with students to ensure student success
  • For Java: • A minimum grade of "B" in the course or higher-level Java programming classes
  • For Python: • A minimum grade of "B" in the course or higher-level Python programming classes
  • Students or alumni who did not take these courses at UMGC but have a CompTIA Cloud+ or an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification may apply.

Nice To Haves

  • Letter of recommendation or referral from a UMGC faculty member who teaches course(s) that include Java and/or Python
  • Background in teaching, tutoring, and/or other type of learning support experience initiatives is highly considered but not required

Responsibilities

  • Provide support as a UMGC student or alumni peer tutor to other undergraduate students enrolled in UMGC courses
  • Respond to undergraduate students’ questions and concerns related to their UMGC assigned courses
  • Respond to questions about course concepts related to assigned readings, projects, or homework assignments
  • Provide clarifications, examples, and tutorials that support the student in developing a problem-solving strategy and authentic learning
  • Promote a professional, respectful, and safe online learning environment
  • Work more closely with English language learners

  • Time Off: C1s that regularly work over 12 hours per week are eligible for limited sick and safe leave at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum accrual of 40 hours in a calendar year.
