Our Peer Support Specialists play a vital role in helping individuals feel understood, supported, and empowered throughout their recovery journey. If you have lived experience with mental health or substance use recovery-and a passion for helping others-you may be a great fit for this role. Position Summary The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) uses their personal recovery experience to offer support, empathy, and mentorship to individuals receiving behavioral health services. As part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, you will help patients build confidence, connect with resources, develop recovery plans, and gain hope for long-term wellness. This role provides support both individually and in group settings.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Iowa Peer Recovery Specialist Certification required (or ability to obtain)
  • Understanding of recovery principles, peer support values, and self-determination
  • Basic knowledge of mental health and substance use disorders
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care and recovery-centered language
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Effective active listening and motivational communication
  • Ability to facilitate peer-led recovery groups
  • Understanding of confidentiality standards (HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2)
  • Basic competency in electronic documentation
  • Compassion, cultural sensitivity, and professionalism in all interactions

Responsibilities

  • Build trusting, supportive relationships using lived experience as a foundation.
  • Provide one-on-one mentoring to help individuals identify goals, navigate treatment, and develop confidence.
  • Model recovery, resilience, and positive coping strategies in a respectful, non-directive way.
  • Facilitate peer-led groups on topics such as relapse prevention, emotional regulation, self-advocacy, and wellness planning.
  • Support individuals in developing personalized recovery tools such as a WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan).
  • Assist individuals in connecting with community resources including housing, employment, peer groups, and recovery supports.
  • Advocate for recovery-oriented practices within the treatment team and support patient self-determination.
  • Document services accurately and objectively in the patient record in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings to provide lived-experience insight and perspective on patient progress.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, supportive environment for patients and staff.
  • Uphold professional boundaries, confidentiality, and peer support ethics at all times.
