Your DAY-TO-DAY as a Peer Recovery Specialist As a Peer Recovery Specialist at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will play a vital role in providing peer support and advocating for individuals navigating their recovery journey. This position involves a variety of responsibilities, including assisting individuals with their physical, financial, social, and personal needs, while also promoting successful community living. You will be instrumental in monitoring mental status, linking clients to essential services, and offering daily living support, fostering a holistic approach to recovery. Your experience as a consumer of mental health and/or substance use services will empower you to build supportive, trusting relationships with those you assist. With strong communication skills and a deep understanding of the mental health system, you will help others develop the skills needed for independent living. As you work autonomously in a fast-paced environment, your commitment to excellence and safety will ensure a healthy, supportive atmosphere for both clients and colleagues. WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL To excel as a Peer Recovery Specialist at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, candidates must possess a unique blend of personal experience and professional skills. You must have experienced a mental health and/or substance use condition and achieved a minimum of 12 months of successful recovery, demonstrating progress in managing your condition and building a fulfilling life. Completion of the DBHDS 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training within six months of hire is mandatory for the Peer Recovery Specialist I role. A successful candidate will exhibit strong communication skills, the ability to foster trusting relationships, and the skills necessary to utilize community resources effectively. Self-motivation, autonomous decision-making, and a commitment to ongoing personal and professional growth are crucial for supporting individuals on their recovery journeys.
