About The Position

Peer Advisors are an integral part of the Piper Center for Vocation and Career. By supporting their peers’ career and vocational exploration, these student leaders play a critical role in advancing the Piper Center’s work, in addition to providing fellow students with guidance and help to navigate career-related resources. If you are interested in developing your leadership skills, supporting your fellow students, furthering your own vocational exploration and career, and being part of a joyful and dynamic team, then we invite you to apply to be a Piper Center Peer Advisor!

Requirements

  • Current St. Olaf student, must be a rising junior or rising senior
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including self-motivation, initiative, and the ability to complete work independently
  • Ability to interact professionally with a wide range of stakeholders including other students, staff, college leadership, faculty, alumni, and employers
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to edit and proofread written materials
  • Ability to work with and welcome students of diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Interest in becoming a student expert to help others explore careers and use the resources of the Piper Center
  • Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills, including the ability to listen, advise, teach, and explain
  • Ability to manage high volumes of student walk-in traffic
  • Resourcefulness and skills in creative problem-solving
  • Ability to work a minimum of 6 hours per week, including occasional evenings or weekend events

Responsibilities

  • Training students on Handshake, the Piper Center’s online job and internship portal
  • Assisting students with resumes and cover letters
  • Helping students navigate their search for jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities
  • Aiding in the development and execution of career fairs, information sessions, industry expert workshops, and classroom presentations
  • Coaching students on how to network and how to utilize networking resources
  • Working with students to identify electronic and print resources for their vocational needs
  • Promoting our events/services and encouraging other students to visit the Piper Center and make use of resources including coaching appointments and drop-in hours.
  • Staff drop-in hour shifts from 8:30 AM - 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • Serve as Project Assistant(s) for a variety of special projects related to coaching areas such as on-campus recruiting, social impact and nonprofit programming, and career exploration for STEM fields.
