About The Position

The Pediatric Rehabilitation Psychology & Neuropsychology Program within the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking a full-time Pediatric (or Rehabilitation) Psychologist. This position involves direct clinical care, teaching, supervision, and program development, with a focus on providing integrated behavioral health services to children, adolescents, and their families seen in the Spina Bifida/Spinal Cord Injury multidisciplinary clinic, the Spina Bifida Teen Transition multidisciplinary clinic, and the Rehabilitation Psychology outpatient program. The position includes a faculty appointment at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, with academic rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary medical team providing comprehensive, family-centered care to children and adolescents with spina bifida, spinal cord injury, and other rehabilitation-related conditions and will maintain an outpatient therapy caseload.

Requirements

  • PhD and/or PsyD from an APA-accredited program
  • 1-3 years of related clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience (Assistant Professor)
  • 4-7 years of related clinical experience at rank or equivalent experience (Associate Professor)
  • Prior experience in a pediatric health psychology setting
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of developmentally and diagnostically appropriate screening and assessment tools.
  • Demonstrated skills using evidence-based treatment models including but not limited to motivational interviewing strategies, consultation models, behavior therapy, and flexible application of cognitive-behavioral therapies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team model and with physicians, psychosocial providers, trainees, and colleagues.
  • Experience and skill in consulting with professional colleagues and staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple tasks and maintain a well-organized work environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Experience developing, training, and supervising psychology trainees.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with pediatric populations with medical complexity, injuries, or chronic medical conditions.
  • Experience with supporting patients with community and school reintegration after injury or illness.
  • Ability to deliver services in Spanish is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide integrated behavioral health services in the Spina Bifida/Spinal Cord Injury clinic and Spina Bifida Teen Transition clinic, including psychosocial screening, brief intervention, and the development and implementation of behavioral health treatment plans.
  • Provide direct evidence-based interventions to youth with acute and chronic injuries or illnesses, including diagnostic evaluations and individual, family, and/or group therapy. Common patient conditions that are a focus of clinical work include spina bifida, acquired brain injuries (e.g., concussion, moderate to severe TBI), cerebral palsy, muscle disorders, spinal cord injury/disease, and functional neurologic disorders.
  • Consult with rehabilitation medicine teams to address behavioral health and environmental factors that impact child well-being, quality of life, injury recovery, and adjustment to chronic health conditions. Collaborate closely with psychosocial partners including social work, family navigators, and community health liaisons to deliver comprehensive, team-based care.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with internal and external providers involved in patient’s care.
  • Supervise, teach, and mentor psychology and neuropsychology trainees (externs, interns, fellows), as well as medical trainees.
  • Engage in research, scholarship, and/or quality improvement projects.
  • Serve on committees, task forces, and/or workgroups. Active pursuit and participation in research activities as well as mentoring residents and other faculty in research endeavors
