About The Position

Provides appropriate diagnostic services under the guidance of the Technical and/or Medical Directors of the lab for pediatric patients. The Pediatric Echocardiographer will provide critical diagnostic information directly to the pediatric cardiologists. They perform and capture echo images to diagnose and monitor congenital heart conditions in young children. They collaborate with the cardiologist to ensure accurate diagnostic information and patient care. This role requires a deep understanding of pediatric congenital heart conditions and the ability to explain procedures to children and families with care and compassion.

Requirements

  • Completion of a formal program in diagnostic medical sonography or related program.
  • Registered as Cardiac Sonographer with ARDMS or CCI. Responsible for educational needs in accordance with license.
  • One or more years of experience working as an Echocardiographer/Sonographer.
  • BLS certification. New hires allowed 6 months to comply.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain quality ultrasound images using fine motor skills for neonatal/pediatric cardiac ultrasound in high acuity NICU and Mother/Baby unit.
  • Obtain additional specific pediatric cardiac ultrasound images needed to diagnosis complex congenital abnormalities.
  • Create preliminary reports and perform all necessary measurements for physicians to review and aid in diagnosis.
  • Promptly alert attending physicians of critical findings.
  • Communicate clearly with young patients and their families to ensure their comfort and safety during the exam.
  • Participate in advanced imaging techniques such as 3D imaging, stress echocardiography, or ultrasound-enhancing agents.
  • Assist with cardiac procedures, utilizing low and high level disinfection techniques per policy.
  • Performs 2D Color Flow and Doppler studies, obtaining all necessary views in the appropriate modalities, according to physician orders, diagnosis, and lab protocols.
  • Follow process for contacting and relaying information to U of M Pediatric Cardiology.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the stress lab, prepping, taking blood pressures, obtaining patient histories, and assisting the exercise technologists.
  • Demonstrates competency in administering contrast. Performs contrast imaging as indicated and per lab protocol.
  • Demonstrates proficiency operating different kinds of ultrasound equipment, including knobology and analysis for each ultrasound machine.
  • Prioritizes ordered testing and request for new services, based upon clinical assessment ensuring a timely delivery of testing which is appropriate to the acuity of a patient's condition.
  • Can recognize acute situations and can notify the appropriate medical staff.
  • Demonstrates flexibility related to varying demand for services. Accommodates patient needs for urgent tests, adding additional tests to the schedule when appropriate, including overtime situations.
  • Advanced knowledge of adult and pediatric complex congenital cardiac abnormalities and related physiology.
