About The Position

Shriners Children’s St. Louis is seeking three full-time Pediatric Anesthesiologists to join our dedicated perioperative team, providing expert anesthesia care for children undergoing a wide range of surgical procedures, including general orthopedics, spine, upper and lower extremity, sports medicine, and select plastic surgeries. Successful candidates will be fellowship-trained in pediatric anesthesia. This role focuses primarily on mid-acuity and lower pediatric patients, including complex neuromuscular cases, with opportunities to utilize regional anesthesia, ultrasound-guided blocks, and advanced airway management techniques. Anesthesiologists will run two operating rooms daily in an all-MD model without CRNA supervision, covering 90% of their time in the OR with occasional PACU and preoperative assessments, and will participate in a rotating 1-in-4 home call schedule. The team works closely with pediatric orthopedic surgeons, PT/OT, recreational therapy staff, and APPs in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, with no resident or fellow teaching responsibilities. Shriners Children’s provides a supportive environment for focused pediatric anesthesia practice, managing complex cases without PICU responsibilities, and fostering professional growth within a cohesive, child-focused care team. This is a full-time, full-benefits eligible position, with compensation determined by a combination of years of post-fellowship experience and departmental equity.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school
  • Completion of an ACGME accredited residency in Anesthesiology
  • Completion of fellowship training in Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • 1-3 years of post-fellowship or equivalent clinical experience in Pediatric Anesthesiology preferred; recent fellowship graduates will be considered based on training and clinical exposure
  • Board certification or eligibility in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), with subspecialty certification in Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • Must possess eligibility for active and unrestricted medical licensure in the state of practice
  • Must possess eligibility for active DEA
  • Must possess Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Credentialing and privileging by the medical staff in accordance with hospital bylaws
  • In-depth understanding of pediatric physiology, pharmacology, and anesthesia-specific considerations in neonates through adolescents.
  • Competency in administering a broad range of anesthetic techniques appropriate for pediatric populations.
  • Proficiency in advanced airway management, vascular access, and resuscitative techniques in pediatric patients.
  • Familiarity with anesthesia equipment, monitoring devices, and safety protocols.
  • Ability to work effectively in high-acuity, time-sensitive environments, including emergency and trauma settings.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills with multidisciplinary care providers and patient families.
  • Compliance with documentation standards, clinical policies, and regulatory guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pre-anesthesia evaluations and develop individualized anesthetic care plans for pediatric patients.
  • Administer general, regional, or monitored anesthesia care to pediatric patients across a range of surgical and non-surgical settings.
  • Monitor patient vital signs, anesthetic depth, and physiologic parameters throughout perioperative phases, including induction, maintenance, and emergence.
  • Manage airway techniques appropriate for pediatric patients, including advanced airway management and ventilation strategies.
  • Respond to intraoperative complications and perioperative emergencies, initiating appropriate interventions as required.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, proceduralists, pediatricians, nurses, and other allied health professionals to coordinate care delivery.
  • Provide postoperative pain management and follow-up, including regional anesthesia and sedation recovery monitoring.
  • Document all assessments, procedures, and interventions in the electronic health record in compliance with regulatory and institutional standards.
  • Participate in departmental quality improvement, safety initiatives, clinical protocol development, and peer review processes.
  • May contribute to the training and supervision of residents, fellows, or students as part of academic responsibilities.
  • Maintain accountability for meeting established productivity benchmarks (e.g. wRVUS), quality metrics, and institutional performance standards
  • Ensure time is allocated in accordance with assigned clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic expectations.
