Job Summary Under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Payroll Services, this position performs payroll and personnel processing transactions in the State Controller's Office database for a significant portion of time. These tasks must be completed in a timely manner to ensure accurate paychecks are generated for employees by designated pay dates, including other campuses who are participating in the Cross Campus Collaboration Project. The incumbent ensures payroll is processed both timely and accurately. Additionally, the incumbent provides guidance and training to Payroll Technician staff and is responsible for processing and advising on leave status changes, and related policies to ensure compliance and accuracy. All duties may be performed for any CSU campus participating in the Cross‑Campus Collaboration Project.

Requirements

  • The ideal candidate will have adequate, transferable experience in HR, payroll, financial, or related administrative functions and the ability to take direction, quickly learn job responsibilities, and apply CSU and departmental policies independently and accurately.
  • They can enter and manage detailed data with zero errors, learn systems such as PIMS and PeopleSoft, review numerical records to identify and correct discrepancies, and perform complex arithmetic computations.
  • This individual works well with detailed information, meets deadlines, handles pressure and frequent interruptions, communicates clearly and professionally with the public, demonstrates strong grammar and office skills, and is both a reliable team player and a proactive starter.
  • Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
  • Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
  • Equivalent to two years of experience in preparing and processing payroll/personnel documents required.

Responsibilities

  • Personnel/Payroll Information Management System (PIMS) Payroll Processing for Salaried and Hourly Employees - Process and complete payroll/personnel documents using the SCO PIMS/PIP system, which maintains official personnel, payroll, and retirement records for CSU employees.
  • Independently initiate PPTs for appointments, separations, and pay status changes for multiple employee categories.
  • Handle overtime, shift differential, special consultant pay, merit awards, retirement adjustments, and other payroll actions to ensure employees are paid promptly and accurately.
  • Customer Service and Department Support - Clearly explain complex payroll policies and procedures to employees and departments.
  • Resolve pay-related issues promptly and professionally.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, management, faculty, and students.
  • Provide counter support during peak periods.
  • Assist with special projects and departmental initiatives.
