About The Position

Modern Family Law, a rapidly expanding national family law firm, is seeking an experienced and detailed Payroll Staff Accountant to join our growing Finance team. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing across a multi-state organization, while also supporting broader accounting and finance operations. This role is remote, but the Payroll Staff Accountant must reside in Colorado or Texas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an accounting or finance role required.
  • Solid understanding of payroll taxes, wage and hour laws, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a multi-location or multi-state organization preferred.
  • Experience with accounting, billing, and financial systems such as QuickBooks, TimeSolv, LawPay, and Salesforce preferred.
  • Experience with TriNet strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Process semi-monthly payroll accurately and on time across multiple states.
  • Ensure proper handling of salaries, bonuses, benefits, deductions, and payroll taxes.
  • Partner closely with People & Culture on new hires, terminations, compensation changes, and other payroll-impacting updates.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and documentation in accordance with internal controls and compliance requirements.
  • Respond to internal payroll-related inquiries from employees with professionalism and discretion.
  • Support accounts payable activities, including invoice review, coding, and payment processing.
  • Assist with accounts receivable functions, including invoicing, payment application, and follow-up.
  • Participate in month-end close activities related to payroll, AP, and AR.
  • Prepare reconciliations and supporting schedules for financial reporting.
  • Assist with year-end compliance activities, including 1099 preparation and filing.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of payroll and accounting processes as the firm scales.
  • Serve as backup support for other Finance functions as needed.
  • Participate in cross-training to strengthen team coverage and continuity.
  • Help improve processes, documentation, and internal controls.
  • Support special projects related to growth, systems, or compliance initiatives.
  • Other duties and projects may be assigned based on business needs.
