Opportunity Overview: We are seeking a Payroll Compliance Analyst to join our New York City office on a full-time, onsite (5 days/week) basis. This role is responsible for drafting and maintaining payroll-related policies and ensuring payroll compliance across the United States and Canada. The ideal candidate brings strong technical payroll knowledge, a compliance-first mindset, and the ability to work independently while serving as a key backup to the payroll operations team. This role partners closely with Payroll, HR, Legal, Finance, and external vendors to ensure payroll practices align with federal, state, provincial, and local regulations. This is an onsite role out of our New York City, NY office.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of payroll experience with a strong focus on compliance
  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or a related field
  • Solid working knowledge of U.S. payroll laws; Canadian payroll exposure strongly preferred
  • Experience with payroll audits, policy documentation, and regulatory compliance
  • Familiarity with payroll systems and compliance platforms (e.g., ADP, Workday, or similar)
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, compliance-driven environment
  • Excellent communication skills and comfort collaborating cross-functionally
  • High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership and accountability
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment that may require quick movements and multitasking
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a desk or workstation
  • Ability to use a computer, keyboard, mouse, and standard office equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, via phone, and electronically
  • Ability to occasionally stand, walk, bend, and reach within the office environment
  • Ability to lift and carry light items (up to 10–15 pounds) such as files, packages, or office supplies
  • Visual acuity sufficient to read printed materials and view a computer screen

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate, compliant, and up-to-date payroll policies, handbooks, and guidelines
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with U.S. and Canadian payroll laws, including minimum wage, overtime, tax withholding, and employee classification
  • Proactively identify payroll compliance risks and recommend corrective actions
  • Support audits, internal reviews, and compliance reporting with clear documentation
  • Act as a trusted payroll compliance resource for cross-functional partners
  • Strengthen payroll governance and controls while supporting business growth
  • Provide reliable backup support for payroll processing during peak periods or absences
  • Draft, review, and update payroll handbooks, policies, and procedural guidelines
  • Monitor and interpret payroll-related regulatory changes, including: Federal, state, city, and provincial minimum wage Overtime and hours-of-work rules Tax withholding, tax registration, and unemployment insurance Employee classification (exempt/non-exempt, contractor vs employee) FLSA, IRS, PAGA claims, and other payroll-related legal matters
  • Support payroll compliance in benefits, workers’ compensation, leave policies, and compensation practices
  • Assist with payroll audits, compliance reviews, and reporting
  • Partner with Legal, HR, and Payroll vendors to resolve compliance issues
  • Serve as a backup for weekly and biweekly payroll operations as needed
